You're asking for TERA.Why are all the races so flawless looking and human-y?
I mean I know it's a "fantasy" but... how about some cute monsters or something? None of the races really look like they couldn't be a human cosplaying.
Even Lalafel look like they could just be a child in makeup.
And now Au Ra, it's just another human looking creature with horns and some scales (that look more like a tattoo or something) on otherwise another hairless, flawless body.
Dunno, I know NA is a different market than JP and this is a JP game. Maybe that's just what is the rage in the east and I wouldn't understand. Other MMOs I've played though, you could be something scary if wanted to (but just cute enough to have a soul, yanno?).
Just getting a feeling that instead of adding a new race, they could just put new sliders for, Horns/no horns, cat ears/no cat ears, Rog muscles/no rog muscles....etc
The primary problem with all games is not that different from the problem with TV series. There is just no budget to create animations for anything that isn't already in the game engine, and the more animations there are, the more the memory requirements increase.
That's why you will more than likely see overlap between the Miqo'te and the Auri because they both have tails. Variations on "funny ears, funny tails" is already in the game engine, so the Deer people up above (probably wouldn't happen because it would overlap with Padjal) , and "fish people"... are basically the Sahuagin (that IS what they are) are the kind of things that are in the real of possibility, but we'd probably never see as playable characters.
TERA's female chibi people (Elin) actually had a variety of ears and tails, and the "male" counterpart were more like furries. But they're still all bipeds.
FFXIV itself has a few other animation types, but nothing with the variety of the bipeds. eg Queen Scylla is basically a centaur-type, but to have a player race of that kind would literately require a whole new set of of armor. The reason we have "different clans" for each race is basically to leverage not having to duplicate gear. Anyone with a snake or mermaid type of lowerbody would have similar problems.
As for oddball races from other FF games, or even other things (Groot anyone?) The Crystal Chronicles had the same "Everyone's a biped" setup Except the Clavats were basically humans, the Selkies were "buff" humans", the Lilties were the chibi's, and the Yukes were tall things with no face. (They wore helmets)
It should be noted that there is an entire Moogle race in FFXIV (which actually looks a whole lot like the Crystal Chronicals version), and the Moogle primal shows there's even gear for them. So it wouldn't be entirely unreasonable to see a playable Moogle race. Likewise Playable Sylphs or any of the monster races probably aren't that much out of the question, but how many players would really want to play them? Not many I presume. That's why you can't.
All the design aesthetics of the game is based around "cute" humanoid biped characters, so expecting anything that can't fit into the existing race gear is probably too much of a compromise (eg PS3 players see support for their version end), and we're not likely to see any significant changes to accommodate anything but biped types.
I would want the Viera. I don't really care much for the beastly races because I feel like no one would really play them. People ask for them... but would people really play them?
Yeah I've been following Bless for a long time, the Lupus race is awesome! ^..^

Would be nice if miqo'te had atleast one more facial feature to make them look more "cat like" like the above picture.
In fact, would be nice if all races have the same amount facial options as the midlander hyur (I think he has 6)
