The big spoiler in the Heavensward opening/trailer was a huge mistake. (spoilers obv)

This is true, and that's why I never watch those until after I beat the game.

However, Heavensward's "opening" is not just that - it is also supposed to serve as the primary trailer and crowd-puller for the game.

FF14 wasn't even on my radar until the "End of an Era" trailer was released. It sold me on the game.

However, if it was preceded by an ominous spoiler warning, I wouldn't have watched it, and likely never bought the game.

This is what so many of you fail to understand.

I don't understand you said from watching the end of an era trailer you were sold on the game. And I'm guessing that you've continued playing right up to the conclusion of the current storyline.

Isn't it contradictory now to turn around and say that people would be turned off the game by spoilers when that's how you were drawn in?

to be fair ARR doesn't contain the story that the spoilers in the End of an Era trailer showed. it does however have the spoilers that are shown in the Heavensward Cinematic(which has unfortunately been named a trailer on the FFXIV ARR youtube).

The fact that you are asking this question when the answer is in the very post you are quoting is the kind of thing that goes to show that people don't even read or try to understand my posts.

It is perplexing that posts like this are getting likes, though obviously it can be assumed that one or two people are going through the thread and liking every post that argues for their side.

I'm just trying to understand your viewpoint. How would you have been drawn to his game had you not been "spoiled" as you said. Maybe you can clarify for this for me: were you spoiled by the end of an era trailer?

Okay I will explain it again in simple terms.

"End of an Era" got me interested in playing the game.

If End of an Era was preceded with a spoiler warning, I would have stopped watching. The result? I might not have bought the game.

The HW trailer is preceded with a spoiler warning.

Hence, if I wasn't already playing, I wouldn't watch that trailer, and Square Enix would lose a potential customer.

Removing the spoiler warning is also not an option, because people would be outraged at the spoilers.

Thus, the extremely simple solution is to cut those 10 spoilery seconds of the trailer, which would in no way affect its quality, and remove the spoiler warning.

The fact that people argue against this is completely puzzling.
