Boy I wish I saw the world in black and white like you.
Yes players buy gil. But that's not really the only variable involved here now is it? Players need a reason to want to buy gil or need a reason to feel it is necessary to buy gil. Who does the responsibility for that fall upon? After all you do realize SE released a game with a free player market in which all players can be (if they choose) to be entirely self-suffcient. They can advance every crafting profession to cap on just one character. They can farm whatever materials they could ever need and dont even have to compete for nodes since they're entirely character based. This essentially created a very WEAK economic model for the player economy. As a result gil doesnt exactly come falling from the sky in coffers just from normal play, at least not at the level where players set prices on the items that really make a difference (which stem primarily from SE deciding to make a few key materials quite a bit harder to come by).
So no this isn't JUST a player created problem. It takes a little from SE's theory of design as well. But that really is irrelevant when you get down to it. RMT exist in every MMO that is any kind of successful so whether or not you have buyers, they're still going to advertise here. In fact if you could actually get EVERYONE who buys to stop buying, the spam would probably actually increase. Why? Because they're going to wonder where all their buyers went, but they're not going to worry about that for too long because their solution will just be to try to go find more buyers. In the form of MORE SPAM. So Stop people from buying, fine. But that is not going to do anything for the advertisement spam at this point. and I'm more than willing to bet that if you asked the question "Which came first the tell spam or the gil buyer?" The answer is going to be the tell spam. Otherwise how is the buyer going to know the service is out there?
Furthermore that advertisement spam from botting software. Which to be honest isn't something we, as players can combat. Not without some tools that SE has to give us first.
So, climb off that really tall horse you got there.
