You only ever have to worry about either the two front or the two back legs. So left, right, left, right, just like how humans walk. The concept is in the fixed alternating pattern. If you cannot understand that, then perhaps you will have a problem dodging it.
“There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self.”
― Ernest Hemingway
For those getting stomped, (And OHKO'd if you've under 5kHP) it's really really simple. Treat the legs like no go zones, and just use a path down the middle. I ran as tank and had no issues keeping hold of most mobs doing this.
If you have to use positional attacks (I.E us Monks) It's not going to fail if you have to stick to just rear attacks when you can't see the positional indicator sometimes. When you can see it, you do not need to be on the edge of the circle, just off centre and out of the pizza-slice part that indicates "rear" attacks. This will not put you in stomp range.
Gotta evade aoes? Get in front of the boss, he won't eat you, at least not until it comes to a cannon, where you can make a safe exit via his legs.
For those on the cannons? If you cannot take about 5.5k damage, let go of the cannon and retreat when the bosses cast bar is at 50%. (Focus target the boss right at the start and this is very easy to do. 10 seconds getting close enough to target him at the start won't get you killed or ruin the attempt). as a monk I have 6.1K HP, so with Fists of Earth and my healers blessing, I activated my cannon from the furthest I could and used it right until it blew up, netting me another 3 hits (6k damage, which considering the dragoon on the other cannon did the same, is a total of 12k) (And dropped me to ~1200HP.). Internal Release + Second Wind got my health up (If it crit, up signifantly, so much I could take the next cannons death too combined with the over-time natural regen).
Simply put, know what you can take, when you can take it, and make sure the other 7 people are doing what they're supposed to.
This is a poorly composed post, I know. :<
We got though it after a few wipes (at the last 15 mins of the fight too at that) it takes slowly yet surely learning the fight, we had the 2 lowest geared DPS work the cannons, the tanks lure in the monsters, subtank going for the DragonKiller when it came time and everyone else on the dragon. The 2nd highest geared DPS was a black mage so he helped clean up any mobs the cannons missed
This trial was a nightmare to try and clear with the first pf party I was in wiping repeatedly, having to wait for the failed cutscene to retry or leave. Df was even worse. The lowest the boss got was to 48%. I ended up calling it quits till anyone was willing to take the time to learn and follow mechanics. The next pf group communicated well and we beat the trial before the dragon could even reach the end of the bridge. It made the clear worth it for that great communication. You do not see that happen much in XIV. The longer this trial is out, the easier it will be to find good parties. After clearing it, I didn't want it made easier. It IS a pretty big dragon after all.

So after reading the OP's post I actually thought I was in for T9 Duty finder type of hard, which did not overly concern me. Today I did the quest line, used the Duty finder to enter the "Steps of Faith", and we annihilated it second try. I was disappointed because it was way too easy. If it 1 month people were still not passing it this post would have been valid. T9 took me around 100 tries, but that rush of beating it was so worth it. Please SE keep it Hard![]()
Not gonna read if it's already been said, but.
This Trial can be dpsed down with minimal (if any) mechanics done at all. The better geared the dps the easier it is.
If your dps is not that geared, go in with 1 tank, 1 healer and 6 dps.
Or if 4dps then let a tank and a healer do the cannons/mechanics while the dps stick to boss.
I think the trial is very well done. It certainly is much different from every other trial we've ever faced (heck, it almost seemed like a level 50 guildhest to me!). But it was really unique and interesting and it requires a LOT of teamwork.
It took my first clear 4 tries to get it down. We had 7 new people. It was kind of crazy at first, but once everyone understood what needed to be done and who went where, it was very easy to defeat. We did have him at 2% our third pull, so even when we understood it we still had some tightening up to do.
His feet are definitely the biggest issue. As a tank, getting stepped on was pretty meh. Since tanks normally get stepped on while getting adds, as a PLD, I always had a buff up so it just tickled. But I tried running it a 2nd time for funsies as a Monk (so I could try out the cannons) and I made the mistake of popping Blood for Blood and trying to scurry under his feet to get Dragon Kick off. It's definitely a 1-shot for anyone who isn't a tank. Tomorrow I will try healing and play with the Dragon Killer!I'm excited.
Also, did anyone notice the colors are REALLY vibrant in that trial? At first I thought it was my monitor pooping itself, but it disappeared after the trial and was very apparent while I was on my Monk (my monk is wearing bright, bright blue). I was alarmed by the sudden upping on contrast, but it looked really nice. I wonder if Heavensward is also going to see a similar lighting change? I think the color change was also present in a few parts of the 2.55 cutscenes (I definitely noticed it in the cutscene after the credits, along with a lot of cloth texture). I just don't really understand why this dramatic lighting change was added specifically to this trial.

Beating T9 is one of the best feelings I've had in any game to date.So after reading the OP's post I actually thought I was in for T9 Duty finder type of hard, which did not overly concern me. Please SE keep it HardI agree that there needs to be more funky content like this and spending a few hours in DF/PF to beat brand new content shouldn't be considered a problem by anyone, casual or otherwise. FFXIV hands people enough on silver platters these days, working with your party members to beat a trial should be considered minimum required effort.
No it's not team jump rope. It's called basic coordination and communication. We completed this in trial roulette with 5 new guys, with both tanks and the Dragoon being experienced with the fight. Me and the DRG handled the cannons, the other tank grabbed the adds by himself. The other 3 DPS kept derping and they managed to miss the 2nd Dragonslayer shot even with snares up. However, we still managed to 1 shot it because A. tanks pulled mobs under/in front of the dragon, B. marked the mobs that needed to be burned down fast and C. told everyone to stay away from the boss feet and respawn + use shortcut whenever they die.
It's team jump rope when you are doing T9 and someone places the lightning in your group. This trial however is incredibly forgiving regarding failed mechanics and deaths. As long as you don't let the MT die and understand some basic english, it's really doable after 1-2 attempts.
