I always thought they defeated Bahamut with Omega, then some Allagan scientist had the twisted idea of using him as a power source. So they imprisoned as many dragons as they could in the satellite, brought a whole sea of crystals into the center, and forced them to summon Bahamut again within Dalamud; which they probably did willingly at first thinking that Bahamut could save them. Afterwards, the binding coils took care of the rest.
