What baffles me is how this thread has gone for so long without getting deleted or at least locked by the moderators... so many violations to the TOS...

As for the description... seems like the OP may simply be reading way too much into it (possibly because of his/her personal convictions on the topic), and ignoring what negates one of the concerns about how the shark is not consumed but discarded in the real world scenario. It's almost like he/she read this part:
"The massive fin of a megalodon, boiled in a rich Far Eastern broth until soft and gelatinous."
And got all incensed and completely neglected to read the rest:
"While not included in the soup, the remainder of the sharkflesh is salted and dried until rock hard, then shaved into paper-thin slices which, when boiled in hot water, create a savory soup that is the base of countless other recipes."
In case you missed it... they are saying the remaining flesh is used in other recipes. This clearly is not a case of people carving off fins and releasing the shark back into the water. It describes instead that culinarians use the flesh in other recipes. Note this does not limit us to just the players that are culinarians....there are items in this game that the players cannot craft, but there are culinarians, alchemists, goldsmiths, etc. that do make things and sell them or we otherwise obtain them as rewards from events and instanced content--or even killing open world mobs.
There doesn't seem to be some inherent political agenda at play with this item (perhaps a bit of a CYA routine in case someone was concerned about people just whacking off the fins)...but seems more like a political agenda of the reader coming into play. Which, makes the post and this thread essentially in violation of the forum rules and as such needs to at least be locked.
PETA pls go and stay go, kthxbai~
Lol, yeah. The mods are pretty quick when it comes to these and I am sure read out post, but only reply if it's important.
Seeing that this has gone so long i guess it's more or less fine until it gets TOO out of hand the the post: "click for the hot chick, stay for the loz"
Posting that constitutes discrimination against another forum member or group (also including forming groups for the purpose of discrimination), insults, slander, libel, harassment of a group or individual.
He pretty much did this when he insulted few people about having enough brain power to get his replies that anyone else isn't worth it.
So basically he ignores positive comments who tell him that its not real and listens to only what he wants to hear making this thread a waste of time.
Not sure why the thread hasn't been killed yet.
Man sharks are scary. Why defend them? It's not like ecosystems are important anyways. *sips on his shark fin soup*
Or maybe you neglected to read the OP.And got all incensed and completely neglected to read the rest:
"While not included in the soup, the remainder of the sharkflesh is salted and dried until rock hard, then shaved into paper-thin slices which, when boiled in hot water, create a savory soup that is the base of countless other recipes."
The OP did not miss it, and directly mentions it in the first post. He believes that this text is an attempt to convince players of the game that this is the typical practice of real-life finners. He thinks that the text is attempting to justify real-life shark finning by tricking players into thinking that it's humane, in order to promote and justify real-life shark finning.
As I have mentioned in previous posts, I find this to be extremely unlikely, and that the text is instead meant to reassure in-game crafters that they are not horrible people for making Shark Fin soup, since the horrible real-life practices are NOT the methods used in-game.
For the OP's opinion to be fact, Square-Enix would need to have a significant interest in promoting shark-finning, enough to risk the political backlash that would come from taking a firm pro-finning stance. For this kind of message to make sense, SE would need to have powerful ties to the shark-finning industry - and to my knowledge, that simply isn't the case. They aren't going to take such a risk unless there's a substantial amount of personal gain to be had. Heck, shark fin soup isn't even all that popular in Japan - it's primarily consumed in China.
Since it makes absolutely no sense for SE to want to glorify shark finning, I maintain that SE is not attempting to glorify shark finning.
Having a soup named Shark Fin Soup doesn't mean I'm going out to eat shark fin soup..... these kinds of debates need to stay out of MMOs. I would agree if it were something sexist or worse. Something that goes against morality in human relationships but this, just no.
