OP I totally agree with you. Nothing representing or reflecting animal and human cruelty of our real world should be represented in a game.
We are already fighting outside in the world for cruelty and abuse to stop, please not here too. One thing is fantasy, killing a fantasy animal for items, another thing is bringing the reality and be reminded on how that animal with the same name is abused in the real world for the same purpose ingame. I wonder if those who defend the cruelty and say it's just a game, would feel the same if we had recipies containing cat meat or a coat containing golden retriever fur.

All jokes aside though... Imo it's a game, it's not real. This stuff is important in real life but it's like Tiggy said earlier in the thread, for once I gotta actually agree with him and say it shouldn't be brought further than something just in the game. ._.

As a side note; Even if this was a reflection on history of abuse, I feel like keeping notes of our past mistakes serves to remind us of how we can or should always make an attempt to change for the good of tomorrow. If things like slavery records or just general reminders of the past were to vanish, we'd probably just continue to make the same mistakes more than we already do in the current day and forget things we lost due to those mistakes and the values we learned. :/

As long as the animal is killed humanely, there's nothing wrong with eating cat meat, or dog meat, or horse meat. Don't confuse the issue - finning is bad because the animal is not killed humanely, not because of the type of animal being killed. People who say that killing one kind of animal is worse than another because one kind of animal is cuter than another, that's just silly. Things get a little more grey when you start talking about animals which may or may not have higher levels of intelligence, such as whales or dolphins or gorillas, but sharks come nowhere near this category - in many ways, they're even less advanced than, say, a tuna fish.

Now, many people would argue that killing ANY kind of animal for ANY kind of food or other product is a bad thing, but that's not the argument here. Not even the OP has any issue with killing sharks for food - his issue is with killing the sharks by cutting off their fin and throwing them back into the water (still alive) to die from blood loss and drowning, all because it's the most efficient way to make money.

Its the whole peta thing again its a game people people like them made remarks about Assassins creed black flag because of whaling even though it was a thing during that time period didn't make it acceptable in this day and age. Same thing with this whole shark fin soup fiasco.

Oh wait this is a game so its all cool people and before people even start on the whole whaling thing from Assassins creed Ubisoft is a western company and we are very against whaling.

Notice how I mention "cruelty" and "abuse". I never said anything against the killing in general, I said against the killing with abuse and cruelty. As you said, there's nothing wrong in humanly killing, and making sure the animal does not suffer, although I don't agree with the greed factor.The wrong part of it is making it suffer and leaving it to perish in pain. I mentioned cat and golden retriever only to refer to the mass inhumanely slaughter in China and Thailand, never said anything about eating cat or dog was wrong. I also do not share the opinion of "one has more or less intelligence than the other, therefore it's more or less important in the suffering order".

So please, I am not confusing anything here. We both are saying the same.

In that case, I'm a bit confused. If there was actually anyone here "defending the cruelty", they probably would be fine with the inhumane slaughter of cats and dogs in China. But the truth is, no one - not a single person in this thead, aside from a few obvious trolls - actually feels that finning sharks is an awesome practice and totally fine.

Heck, I'd wager that even the shark-finners themselves don't wake up in the morning, smile evilly in the mirror and say to themselves, "Boy, I sure am looking forward to torturing some sharks today!" They fin sharks because it is an expedient, more efficient way to make money, not because they love to harm animals.

And yes, people do kill and eat cats in this game. Specifically Coeurls. We use the fur, too. You'd have to be pretty paranoid, though, to manage to link Sauteed Coeurl with some kind of political agenda in support of animal cruelty in China! That's just what the OP has done - he interpreted the text on Shark Fin Soup in-game as an attempt to trick people into believing that shark finning is a humane industry. More likely, that text is meant to mollify folks concerned about the cruelty associated with shark finning that, unlike in the real world, in Eorzea sharks are properly butchered, and more of the carcass is put to use. You can eat Shark Fin Soup in-game and know that the shark did not suffer for your 30 minute bonus to Craftsmanship and CP!
