>_> Which needs to stop, now. Some of us actually want a heavy armor, sword using DD. For some reason they seem to have a mindset that if it has heavy armor and uses a sword, it must be a tank and that's stupid.
Tbh, adding more tanks in general won't make people who don't want to tank, tank. Not to mention, theres only so many different ways you can tank, so I think we have enough already, just like enough healers. More DD would be good, you can do a variety of those. Kind of wish astrologian was a magic DD :/ considering we technically only have one atm, blm (not counting smn because...lolsmn) and blm is pretty bland as it is now. So I hope sam ends up being a DD, not a tank.
Say what? How is your argument against more tanks not applicable to more DD? I mean especially since there's already a bunch more DD?

I assume you meant by how theres only so many ways to tank? There's more variety in how damage is dealt, rather than taken. And like I said, adding more tanks won't magically make people who hate tanking, decide to start, they don't like it for a reason, all that will result in is resources/time spent and a low % of people actually using the job, which could be better spent on things more people will actually use.
Actually there can be quite a lot of variety in tanking. Just look at World of Warcraft. Each tank has its own unique flavor to how it tanks:
- Warrior has offensive utility, high mobility and their active mitigation is entirely proactive, requiring them to anticipate damage rather than react too it.
- Paladins have a selection of team support abilities and defensive utilities and can choose between healing their party members/selves or increasing mitigation.
- Death Knights have great control over their own survival and have a number of low-duration, low-cooldown abilities they can use to "roll" CDs.
- Druids take more damage, but have high evasion (upwards of 60% when their active mitigation is used) and are extremely versatile, able to use certain abilities to deal physical or magical damage as well as heal the entire raid nearly as good as an actual healer (for a limited time).
- Monks take significantly less damage per hit, but that damage is applied to them over the next 10 seconds, but by using their active mitigation and other abilities, they can reduce or even completely clear that damage, allowing them to soak up extremely high amounts of damage and then expunge it.
So no, there are actually many, many ways to tank. FFXIV just hasn't touched on them yet.
Edit: Added bullets to make it easier to read.

Is there? How many different ways can you buff yourself, slap a DoT on someone and hit them really hard?
That's ridiculous. There's just as many ways to tank as there are to DPS. Look at Engineers and Stalkers from Wildstar, Bounty Hunters in ToR, the tanks in CoH, DCUO and Rift. There's plenty of ways to tank that don't involve shield bashing. I don't know why people act like any creative or "cool" class should be the sole domain of DPS, like they're the only ones who should be allowed to have fun. Then you wonder why there's no tanks.

Actually, Blue Mage would make a pretty good Magic Tank, but different reasons. I could see it as the sort of tank that eats AOEs or mobs. Bad Breath for a bunch of debuffs to draw aggro, White Wind to heal everyone a bit(though have it focus on drawing aggro more), and Mighty Guard can serve as a handy def/mdef buff or maybe a sort of damage resistance that negates a certain ammount of damage per hit to deal with mobs of weak enemies/attacks?
Or maybe a move that draws in AOE damage to the Blue Mage and make it a harder hitting attack to the tank? Of course, add attacks like goblin punch and detonate as standard attacks/combos as well.
