Having outfits be gender locked when there's no real reason to (i.e. nothing about the outfits that particularly relates to one gender over another) is, on its own, mildly annoying. They did this with the Lightning Strikes event, where one clearly unisex outfit was given only to female characters and a completely different (but also clearly unisex) outfit was given only to male characters. But at least that time there was some equality in the type and relevance of the two outfits.

This new example, however, between an elaborate and highly detailed reproduction of an iconic character's outfit for half the population and a generic sexy bunny for the other half, goes beyond mildly annoying to downright insulting. We should be getting either both outfits for both genders, or at least equivalent ones. Provide both a detailed and classy reproduction of a previous character's outfit to both genders, and provide a skimpy sexy outfit to both genders.

I used to be so happy with how well SE was providing gender equality in their designs. Both genders get some skimpy sexy outfits. Both genders get some elegant clothes. Both genders get some badass fully armoured styles. That they're now moving away from that towards the "males are real characters and females just eye candy" stereotype is really disappointing.

This x1000. I am deeply appreciative of the fact that this game 1.) allows me to design a character who looks like a real woman (so grateful for the boob and muscle sliders), and 2.) at least has options for gear that looks like armor that would actually protect her in a fight. When they do stuff like this that pigeon-holes females into the role of subservient eye candy, it is really disappointing, and it sends the message that they don't really GET it, or maybe just don't care.

It's a game. THEIR game. They don't have to be "politically correct". What's insulting is how anyone who doesn't seem to mind their decision is automatically labeled as Sexist, Homophobic, or a Bigot.

This is just delicious. You people asked for this by choosing female characters in a Japanese developed game, and got the JP perspective on gender roles.

Sharp, well dressed men, and adorable, self-confident women, as it is for much of the well-adjusted world. If you thought you could pick and choose some of these to fit your unique catgirl or bunnyboy, I'd suggest a Bioware game.

The JP perspective on gender roles should enter the late 20th century eventually.

He said a main character primary costume. We never got to wear the honey bee outfit. Cloud wore the dress, Aerith wore the red dress. None of the main characters ever got to put it on, just NPC's.

They have international customers. If they only want to appeal to their culture or their own perspective, of course they have to except to run into problems.

A couple crossdressers whining about costumes won't show up as even the smallest blip in their stock portfolio.

Also, I'm not the most devoted FF scholar, are there ANY female characters closely associated with the casino/entertainment industry similar to Setzer, and thus worthy of representation?

FFX-2 (y'know, the one recently HD remastered) had four (Yuna, Rikku, Paine and Leblanc) outfits in the Lady Luck dressphere. Selphie from VIII has a gambler's limit break. Corsairs from XI had a similar outfit and RNG-related abilities (I think, I never played it). But even then, what Setzer is wearing isn't very different from what Faris (from V) used to wear, which showed up in Lightning Returns, so it should look good on female characters as well.

Also, look up Faris. Crossdressing has been part of Final Fantasy franchise on an obvious and memorable scale since 1992.
