I'd like to see how the Japanese dialog translates.

Much less padded and much more to the point, actually (forgive me for not line-by lining). The male Miqo'te actually flames pretty hard in ways that would be rather difficult (and possibly offensive) to translate literally, so we can consider ourselves blessed that they chose not to.

just because they are a couple doesn't mean they are together, it is probably meant that they are a couple of travelling companions

And... nope, the original script used the English loan-word "couple," which, in spite of it's meanings in English, is only used for romantic couples in Japanese. They aren't a pair, or a duo, they're a couple, in the "we love each other" sense.

But trying to argue the semantics is just silly, since they wouldn't have been run out of town for being "just friends" across racial boundaries. Unless it was Gridania, I guess.
