Taikoubou is the Japanese translation of the Chinese nickname for a scholar who loved fishing.
If you've played FFXI, you might be better acquainted with his proper Chinese name, a certain Lu Shang.

Am I doing something wrong? I can't even get so much as a bite from the 2.3+ fish despite fishing the right spots and the right times with the right bates. I'm pre-2.4 BiS + food + Supra + Luminary etc etc. The only thing I'm not running are my FC actions.
Again, it's not that I get them on my line and get "fish got away" messages, it's that I've gone dozens of hours now working on these 2.3+ bastards without ANY goddamn nibbles from them whatsoever. Different 2.3+ fish too. I move around as the weather/time dictates and every single one of the bastards has been the same. Big ol' no-show... Same for straight catch and mooch alike. Is my character broken? This seems beyond ridiculous and I'm getting pretty infuriated.
Edit: This may have been caused by being unable to collect Timeworn Treasure Maps. I usually mine a Peisteskin daily but I haven't for several days as I was focused on fishing. I had not cleared any of the maps from my inventory and had most types. I fish with a controller while tabbed out and didn't notice this but today, after finally getting the one type of map I didn't have in my inventory yet, I immediately went on to catch 3 2.3 fish almost immediately with several others finally starting to bite. Can anyone confirm that treasure maps take up big game fish slots or in some way inhibit big fish's ability to bite for us? My sample size was over the course of days where this was happening to me so I'll definitely be purging my maps as required. If that's the case, though, that's some pretty ridiculous programming...

Which Big Fish requires the highest amount of Gathering? And what is that number? I'm currently at 383 with Food and wondering if that's enough to catch every fish in the game including 2.4's additions.

I'm not sure what the max is for all of the new fish, but I'm certain that's not enough. I recall you needing over 400 for Nephto Dragon. There's another thread about it on this forum (the 2.4 fish thread). That should have the numbers in it.

383 is enough to catch all of the 2.3 big fish and most of the 2.4 big fish, but there are some that will need more. Every fish besides Nepto Dragon can be caught with 399 Gathering, with Nepto needing 403.

I have been trying to catch the Tuna Shark at Costa del Sol, but twice now I have missed the fish. This guide says I need 338 gathering and I am at 359. It sucks because there is only a 2 hour window and I am lucky if I even catch one HQ fish to mooch. Any ideas why that is happening? I never had a problem catching other fish before

What Jeckyl_Tesla said. If you can, try and get there two to three ingame hours before the window opens to catch your HQ sardine. Once you do, just sit and wait.I have been trying to catch the Tuna Shark at Costa del Sol, but twice now I have missed the fish. This guide says I need 338 gathering and I am at 359. If you've already been doing that then nevermind!

If you pre-catch your HQ fish, be sure to not cast the second the time changes! There's a small lag between the timer and the game actually acknowledging the change in time. You can see this with the weather - the weather won't change at exactly 08:00, it sometimes doesn't change until 08:02. I've cast for a weather-based fish in that window and caught the fish even though the weather was no longer correct. This implies that what you can catch is locked in the moment you cast, and also that the servers sometimes experience lag causing windows to open (and close) later than they should.
So, I recommend waiting until the window's been open a couple minutes (like, until about :03 into the window) just in case when pre-catching so as not to waste the pre-caught HQ fish.
