I think some areas have higher % chances of giving HQ fish. I caught my 1000 lvl 41-50 fish at reaver hide. 350 of them were HQ and especially 15 out of 20 wahoo were HQ too.

Same should go with Frilled shark, I'm pretty sure each of the mooch fish has a 40-50% HQ rate

1,000 fish is a very small sample size. I wish ff14angler.com kept track of HQ/NQ ratios

If each cast takes on average 5 Eorzean minutes (15 seconds - a high estimate), that's 12 casts per hour, 10 hours per window (food expires after 10 Eorzean hours anyway), for 120 casts per window. So, that gives about a 50% chance per window to catch one. The windows are pretty common, from what I've seen. I often catch two per window.
You also must consider the magical "Fish gets away..." when the RNG says NO UR NOT GETTING THE FISH HAHAHAH.

And yea, HQ rate on mooching seems to be closer to 50%.

I'm at nr. 13 Anomalocaris that has gotten away, with 383/393 Gathering, depending if we raid and use other FC buff.
Not sure if bugged or what.

Edit: nr 15 Fish gets away...

until I got my first olgoi I was able to achieve "Good things come to those who Bait: Thanalan IV"
more than 500 fish caught without an olgoi, but around 15 times the fish got away messages
while working on Thanalan V I already caught 7 titanic sawfish

fishing can be such a pain

I wonder what the conditions for the 2.4 big fish will be u.u

Ironworks Fishing Rod Fisher's Primary Tool Item Level: 80 / Equipment Level: 50
Rumor has that fishing enthusiast Biggs used the Garlond Ironworks crafting facilities afterhours to create this magitek-enhanced rod.

There's also several new pieces of body gear: Artisan's X / Forager's X for crafters/gatherers. Which are, according to the listed recipes, crafted using Mastercraft demimateria.

If they're meldable on top of that (which they likely are given they are crafted) I'm going to be distressed because that'll wring out my wallet enough as is. At least they are shared across classes (Unlike the new rod for Fisher/new offhands for everyone else)

According to another player, the Japanese notes have a little more information.

Go Big or Go Home IX - Title: Taikoubou
Go Big or Go Home X - Item: Ironworks Fishing Rod

Google translate says Taikoubou means angler
