^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^all of this.Slepnir has existed in the game as a mount in beta, there was a Dev Blog a while back with a dev playing with it. He has to for Odin to work properly, as Odin takes the appearance of a player. Recently it was added back in as a proper player mount, as you can find on XIVDB as they datamined it. Slepnir was most likely going to be a rare drop from Odins Extreme Trial when it's put it in. They have cut it off to sell in the cash shop.
With the first items in the cash shop they have, with Slepnir, already set a precedent to remove content that was going to be in the game and sell it instead. Won't be surprised if the Minions were also meant to be in the game as a seasonal reward too like Minifilia and Thancred were. Now whenever they add items to the cash shop, the first question will be, were these actually taken out of the game to be sold instead of being obtainable in the game?
This is actually a good idea, so people who love to dumb money can just burn it away while hardcore players and stuff will actually get it doing the good old way.Playing(I know, crazy concept huh!?)Just my 2 cents: I don't see difference between the cash shop and the Collector's Edition exclusive in-game stuff.
Essentially, you pay more to have a content unobtainable in normal gameplay.
As suggestion, I think that cash shop could sell timed-exclusive content.
You want to mount Sleipnir right now? Pay with cash, but next month all players will have the chance to obtain Sleipnir.
None of that because people keep forgetting the one obvious thing:
If Sleipnir was meant for us, it would have been added to the ODIN MANTLE loot list, not only at launch, but sometime over the last year and no, someone can't use the "it was meant for cash shop" excuse because the only reason people knew of his existence was the DEV TOOL TEST as per the blog and the XIVDB datamining.
Man, I've read this whole thing and I still don't get the support. And I have tried. I have really tried to connect with the idea, to understand it from a different perspective, but I can't.
All I'm seeing is thanking SE for finding more ways to take your money. Certainly they're allowed to, but I just can't see why you would want them to.
It's ultimately a positive for them and a negative for you. Paying for content you could theoretically obtain in a week or so (actually playing, and hopefully enjoying, the game) for the price of two months subscription with no in game alternative? I just can't see the logic in supporting that.
The problem you're having is you assume people want them to - SE is a for profit business, they're not a charity organization. If they know (and were clearly correct about this) that people would pay extra for something, they'll do it. It's like if you go to the Ios Store or Playstore and download "free" games, I guarantee you will end up having to pay for 'energy' or 'crystals' of some kind to further enjoy it - That's simply the standard of gaming now, thanks to the millions upon millions who have proven they will buy extra (you know, day one dlc and forced dlc became a thing because of this.)Man, I've read this whole thing and I still don't get the support. And I have tried. I have really tried to connect with the idea, to understand it from a different perspective, but I can't.

So it's quite easy to understand: You either do or do not support it, but it's undeniable there's more than enough gamers who will pay extra for what they want - Yoshida even mentioned this during E3 that NA gamers are more inclined to pay for what they want than a sub, which is why F2P and MOBAs are insanely popular beyond simply being fun.
I've tried to tackle it from every way I could myself and it just boils down to what a new age of gamers are now used to seeing and accepting as the norm. Ever since the introduction of DLC in video games became wide-spread paying above and beyond the sticker price for any product has become normal.
Don't click "I agree" if you disagree with their practices - Yes you will not be able to play the game, but if you don't want to "take everything they do", as people say, vote with your wallet, don't play their product. Also, stop acting like you're forced to use the cash shop.
Then again, I don't know if we're playing the same game - Since I was able to go through most of 2.4's content without paying anything beyond my sub fee.
That's great and that's what people have been saying. The comments in defense of cash shop though are about exactly that, defending it. As in it shouldn't be the cause for you leaving because is just vanity, you're not forced to, you can progress just fine, that's what everyone else is doing. I've seen even insults thrown at those that don't accept the cash shop.
Yes people in the end will vote with their wallet as they always do. They're just voicing their opinion first and taking action later and I see nothing wrong with that.
Again, they being able to do something doesn't mean it's okay and that you should take it no complaints, we are customers, while we cannot force our opinion we can and should let them know how we feel about how they are handling their product. If you want to take it with a more submissive stance then more power to you, but don't expect everyone else to be as submissive.
Feel free to show me any other way to obtain the current and future cash shop exclusive items.
Keyword: Most, unless you managed to get a Sleipnir by playing the game, then I congratulate you for achieving the impossible.
