Just to compare to Guildwars 2 (I often do)
Most vanity stuff there is like, $2-5 for minor stuff. A Full body skin (complete suit of armor skin) might run $10. And this is a no-sub game...so it's a little more justified. Also, you can get the "Real Money" currency by trading in game currency, so you need not use any real money at all if you're thrifty.
They offer sets of 25 or so items which can be expensive, but individually the most expensive item is somewhere around $10.

There's really no reason why the mount should cost nearly double a monthly fee.
Companies used to develop items like this and place them into expansions. They would then charge us $30-$40 for the expansion. So if you consider the amount of content that typically comes in an actual expansion then divide it by the number of new items introduced the minions and mount should cost about 10 cents. Now one 'could' argue that we are given content for free through the .1 .2 additions but it could also be argued that those were simply items that were supposed to be in the last release that didn't make it and should have been included in the last cost. Since they have already intended to charge us for the Heavensward expansion yet they are 'still' trying to shake additional coin out of us through a cash shop, that is what puts this squarely into the realm of greed and overpriced BS. However... since the player base still consists of too many willing to spend money on them we should not expect anything to change anytime soon.
There is a reason the old saying, "A fool and his money are soon parted" exists...
Sleipnir's price tag would be justified if it came with it's own emote (like Drake Breath) or a free month.
Minion prices are fine.
Old Halloween equips are ludicrously priced.
$1.25 & $2.50 would've been far more appropriate.
Idc what WoW's prices are, if they cost more or the same they're generally overpriced.
The Old Halloween equipment is overpriced, but I feel that they should still be available in game for gil not in the cash shop.
The minions are cute and I love minions, but for the price I feel they should be distributed to all the characters on that account.
Sleipnir is awesome, but just flat out overpriced. Why should I buy a mount that's twice my monthly sub?
Currently, there is nothing I'm willing to pay for in the cash shop. I've seen a few mounts and minions around, but I wonder how much has SE benefited from this compared to the backlash from the community?
Easy, you have two options:
1. You want to buy it because you want to
2. You don't buy it because you feel it's overpriced.
So asking 'why?' in that sense is more of a personal preference, not being forced onto you. As for how much they benefited compared to backlash? Look at the DPS queue since NIN released...backlash was only from the small vocal group that said the cash shop would kill the game.

Well, yeah.
You're paying for a tiny fraction of a 25$ game.
Even at only 1$, it's a massive markup.
As far as I know, no one said that. What was said was that it was stupid and not fair for the playerbase/customers, and that it has the potential to get even worse (remember the retainers?), specially if some people keep supporting these things.
then don't buy it
i can think of many other companies who put less work into delivering a product to it's customers and try to advertise it as worth it's price
I did not say anything about the cash shop killing the game. Or that I'd never buy anything from the cash shop. Or that I was against it's existence. Considering how much hoopla this has caused on the boards I was only wondering how much money SE is actually going to get from this. Simmer down.Easy, you have two options:
