As incomplete as it was, I do miss a number of Tanakas ideas.
Sadly, as others have said, they didn't translate well into an MMO setting.

Welcome to the internet!!!!
FF13. All I need to say here. (side example: Mass Effect 3).
I think may people is misunderstanding this thread.
This is not a 1.0 vs ARR thread, or was not my intention of it to be one.
I'm just sad to see everything that Tanaka tried to put into the game go instead of being worked on or improved (because gameplay ideas and mechanics are only good or bad depending on how they are implemented). Sure, 1.0 was severely lacking in that aspect and the consumers made it pretty clear, but that doesn't mean the ideas behind it are not valid, it just make them unfinished, unpolished and incomplete.
I'm not saying that 1.0 was perfect (even though I enjoyed it more than ARR so far, and I've been on opposition or disagreement for almost every change Yoshi-p has brought to the game ever since he took the mantle as Director/Producer) or that Tanaka is better than Yoshi-P or whatever. I just happen to be an alien that likes Tanaka style of making games, Yoshi has another, which I enjoy too (hence why I'm still, and will keep playing ARR) but not as much as Tanaka's.
The change of DRK not having a base Class is just another indicator if the intention of getting rid of the Armory, which is one of the main axis that made XIV a great and original game among all those in the market, so it's just another step in the "WoWfication" of FFXIV and that makes me sad. And even if I can enjoy this kind of game, I like more Tanaka's way of doing things, even if he would have been a better producer if he listened to his customers a little more, and to his execs a little less.
It's just a matter of personal taste, nothing more nothing else.
On a final note, all of you guys have nothing to fear because Yoshi-P is here to stay and will keep making the game more akin to your tastes, and the few of us that liked Tanaka way of doing things are left with no game to go (yet).
So you hate that Yoshi is trying to phase out the armory system, and praise Tanaka. The same Tanaka who worked on FF 11 with no class system and only jobs? I have a high fever and still I can logic better than this.
Edit: I will say this, I neither hate nor love Tanaka and his work. Like other people have said, sometimes even Producers get forced into a position that they cannot fix.
At least with Yoshi, he seemed to have fought back management, who probably wanted to save money by just making changes/fixes. Said, "we have to start from scratch this is a janky system." Did research, got funding, improved the team, and made a now popular mmo. (This is why he is currently getting a lot of respect.) Maybe had it been the other way around we'd be praising Tanaka but we will never know.

If whatever you're shooting doesn't die after you pump 8, 32 caliber, slugs into it, it's probably a dragon.
Tanakas flop or not, he has a far better established career than Yoshi-P. Sure, XIV was a disaster, but you have to be a fool to believe that all of those mistakes were made by him and not management above.
I don't hate Yoshi-P, I admire him deeply too, he took a challenge very few people would have and succeeded with it, I just don't enjoy his gameplay and game mechanic ideas as much as Tanaka's.
One game had just jobs, which was fine, but I don't want another game with just jobs, I love the concept of the Armory where you level classes and then combining skills and gear you freely create your own job, I never wanted XI-2, what I liked about Tanaka's direction of XIV is that it was different from any other MMO, broken or not.

To be frank, classes are pretty pointless in the grand scheme of things. As soon as you equip the job crystal you never look back as to be fair there is no real reason to. The amount of cross class skills are severyly limited making the choice of what is usefull pretty mandatory.
But they can still cross job abilities, maybe with the removal of the class system they can expand on that even more allowing for more variety in choice. Also they could easily add prerequisites to unlock jobs by making it similar where you need xx level in one job and yy level in a second job to unlock the new one. As a theoretical example, 15 PLD and 30 WAR to unlock DRK.
I wonder if this is a precursor for things to come..... Maybe we'll see the class system scrapped altogether in 3.0 which I would like seen done just due to the fact that it limits the actual jobs to just 5 abilities.
And this, the introduction of jobs and job crystals, was the first step to eliminate the armory, where you could freely combine 10 skills from all classes to make your own job.To be frank, classes are pretty pointless in the grand scheme of things. If you want to cross equip more than 5 abilities, then it's the job system what should be scrapped and go back to polish and balance he class system.
