Not in all countries can debit cards be used for online payment. For example Dutch banks do not supply debit cards which can be used for online payment. Rather a system by the name of iDEAL is used, see http://www.ideal.nl/en/ for more info. Square Enix however does not support iDEAL. Credit card usage in the country is extremely low. Gametime cards or PayPal are pretty much the only remaining options. And the FFXIV gametime cards are scarcly available outside of major cities. Making it a bit of a hassle for those players to pay for FFXIV right now. Obviously not impossible, but far from consumer friendly.

That's very surprising. I guess not all countries are up with the play. I thought my country, which does offer debit cards, was a little behind.... regardless, based on what the OP has said previously, they don't have this problem.

From a google search it looks like the Dutch alternative is the Mastercard owned Maestro debit cards, which are the same thing as my Visa debit card. I wonder if that's considered a Mastercard? Because the mog station supports Mastercard debit cards.

It's not a matter of being behind. It's a matter of the banks having adapted another system as there was no standard available. For international companies its very easy to incorporate iDEAL payments for the Dutch market as well. And the transaction rates for companies are lower than the transaction rates of e.g. credit card payments, making the incorporation of iDEAL a lucrative choice.

Many international companies DO support payments by iDEAL. Valve allows for payment with iDEAL on Steam. Blizzard allows for payments with iDEAL. Sony allows for payments with iDEAL. Electronic Arts allows for payments with iDEAL on both Origin as well as within e.g. SWTOR. Etcetera.

Square Enix is in this sense behind by having a very limited range of transaction possibilities. Despite the ease of incorporating so much more.

Our debit cards are most often Maestro yes, but they're ATM only cards. Few are VISA, same story with those though. The cards lack a credit-card like number and any real form of authentication. It's a chip only form of payment on it, with pin-code. And up to a few years ago simply an old-fashioned swipe. For online payment by card, picking up a credit card is the only real alternative. For online payment by direct transaction, iDEAL or PayPal are your options.

That's interesting. Their website seems to say differently and even has a picture of a chipped Maestro card with the credit card numbers:

Maybe it's not available everywhere I guess?

This is the typical maestro debit card as which can be used for online payments:
    http://www.viewsonuk.com/wp-content/...stro-card1.gif

Note the credit card like number annotation, expiration date, and although can't be seen here, a similar security code on the back as with for example a mastercard.

This is however what a typical dutch debit card looks like:
    https://www.ing.nl/Images/lr_ING_pin...m14-114668.jpg

Pasnummer is the debit card number, 223A456 in this example. There's no security code on the back. And due to the lacking of the required numbers, online payment with them is impossible.
