How about they focus on making those games good so that they are financially successful in their own right rather than bleeding money from already loyal fans and subscribers to this game?
You'd think 2.5+ million adventurers would be a sign of success, I mean everyone loves throwing around that number as a sign of how great and profitable the game is, apparently not.Because a few mounts and minions on itself isn't the sole reason you're currently paying a subscription? SE employees too like to get paid at the end of the month? Investments into new game development have to be made? Server maintenance has to be covered? You know, just the basic essentials for any viable company to stay afloat?
The way cosmetic items are handled in-game as of now is crappy as hell. Unless you have million gils, you cannot have it.
It's been three patches and still I can't have the Spring Dress because of the stupid price its materials are put at, and who knows when they'll be made easier to get.
I'd prefer hand over five bucks and get it.
I scoff at the "support SE" argument too. But stop slinging the term "moral superiority" around. You're doing it just as much.

Once again greed rears its ugly head. SE drop the cash shop, if you are not making the money you want than maybe you need to make a better quality game, and we all know XIV isnt the highest quality with what you have been doing with lock outs and stuff or let me say etc and let players decide what needs improvement.
I for one think that's a great plan. Use the cash shop money to continue to fund XV which is probably way over budget because it's been how many years of them "working" on it.
Welcome to corporate 101. You're understanding simple business economics. Yes, it is standard practice for financial income within game developers to be redistributed to other projects. Heck, if not other projects would never even come in to existence. The gaming market is a financially unpredictable one. And many projects get funded by cash cows.
EA has Sims + Battlefield.
Activision has WoW + CoD.
Ubisoft has Assassin's Creed.
Valve has Steam.
Square Enix has been struggling, but may now have FFXIV to fulfill this role.
Publishers which lose their cashcows? Well, they go belly-up. Just think of what happened to THQ. The Warhammer 40k series once was an important source of income to them. However, the sequel failed to generate similar revenue, and not too long after they were out of the market.
People are often quick to try and burn down publishers for having such cash cows. But if it wasn't for that, the gaming industry would be long dead. AAA titles would be impossible.
