In the majority of the topic, people's own internet isn't even regarded as the issue. As usual though, people tend to believe there's a direct line between their PC and the FFXIV servers. Nothing in between. And the problem is either on their end or with the FFXIV server.
I wouldnt get your hopes up in the least.
After seeing a post from the mods/devs stating they couldnt alphabetize a list of names because it was "difficult".... I've given up hope of SE ever impressing me.
You have no idea how that data is organized what-so-ever. Alphabetizing isn't the problem. It's what format the data is in and is it even feasible to do that with the existing structure. It's easier to do on certain data types than others, and some data types are stored in memory differently such that it limits how you can change it (mutability) so that they can get speed increases elsewhere (ps3 limitations). If you don't understand why something like that might be difficult then it shows how little you know of the topic in general. It's not as simple as "lol L2alphabatize."
As for what reality_check was talking about. Think of it like this. The internet is a highway that sometimes has potholes, congested off and on ramps, and traffic backed up. Square builds the car (a packet) and sends it out on the highway (the internet). There is no possible way square can make a packet that will ever make it resistant to all the problems on the high way. You can't build that car with massive tires so it bypasses the traffic because it feels like it. You can't build it so potholes never effect it. So it's quite simply not possible for square to make some technology to reduce lag between client and servers. That would suggest square has control over the highway when it doesn't. All square does is produce the car. What happens to produce the car and to unpack the car on arrival are a different topic entirely as are the location of the servers.

Pretty much, if there's some problem with the routing then you'd think they would find a way to improve it on their side, maybe by changing data centers or contacting their providers about it. I get it wouldn't be exactly cheap, but hey those fabulous 2.5 million accounts created should help, right.
I remember a post saying how text takes up more GPU memory than images. SE always do things backwards so it's no real surprise there.
I don't think they are ever going to listen to us. They haven't yet and its been -so- long. Everything they reply to on here is glamour stuff, fan festival, etc. Nothing game breaking or big. Zzzz.
Like how netflix was able to get their problems resolved? Oh that's right. They were forced to throw tons of bucks at Verizon and Comcast to fix it. SE doesn't have the money to do what Netflix did. Aside from the fact that Verizon and Comcast basically strong armed netflix into doing it by degrading their customers experience greatly. Your solution allows the companies that own the backbones to act like thugs. They gouge us to pay for faster internet, and then they throttle traffic until the provider pays again. At some point and time throwing money at the problem isn't the answer. Support net neutrality.Pretty much, if there's some problem with the routing then you'd think they would find a way to improve it on their side, maybe by changing data centers or contacting their providers about it. I know enough about the subject to know that a list of displayed names on screen should not be "difficult" to sort, period. You have no idea how that data is organized what-so-ever. The entire game is poorly coded, both to accommodate the limitations of the PS3 and due to sloppy work on SE's part. All they do is make constant excuses about it.... sorting name... housing... etc.
Its like they put no forethought into anything.
A list of names isn't difficult to sort no. Like I said you don't know anything about the data type or structure. You're talking about something you don't know. You're trivializing something you have no domain knowledge about because you're talking from a place of ignorance on the topic. If I had a dollar for everytime someone had a feature request and said "why don't you just" or "isn't it as simple as" then I wouldn't have to work anymore. IT's. More. Complicated. Than. You. Think.I know enough about the subject to know that a list of displayed names on screen should not be "difficult" to sort, period.

Also, as a programmer myself I know you never have perfect foresight to make a perfectly flexible system that meets every future use case. It's not realistic in the real world. The magical scenario where it's perfectly ready for any future content is a fantasty.
People refuse to accept that truth. They're armchair dev's who think they actually know what they're talking about. I'm a programmer myself but all that does for me is give me the knowledge to know how ridiculous things can be and to know solutions aren't always so simple. People need to give the dev's a break. Especially when those people have no idea what they're criticizing.Does anyone here, who posts about 1 ms update, have any experience in developing client-server application and really understand what does it mean, when server has several thousand connections, and each one updates 1000 times per second? What are the issues with this, for example? It's not just about lowering some constant in code, it's way more complicated.

I have to use a 3rd party app to help improve latency pretty much every time FFXIV is patched. But I hear you OP, sometimes this game feels like walking with tar on the bottom of your shoes.
