I remember when FF8 first came out. I was like "wtf is all this -ra, -ga nonsense??" It was so annoying after playing 7+ FF games with numbered spell tiers.

That was the first time the spells were called that in English. FF EIGHT. The first 7 games (more if u count FFT and others) were NOT named this way.

Fire 1, Fire 2, etc IS the classic naming scheme for english. I'm glad they kept it.

I think the biggest problem I had with the response was them saying it was for simplicity when it doesn't accomplish that at all.

As has been pointed out several times, the suffixes are the actual names of the spells in Japanese and have been corrected to these since VIII. The numbers were due to character limitations and nothing else.

Also, you didn't play "7+" of them like this. You played, at the most, five. The original, IV, VI, VII, and Tactics were the only ones available in English at that time. And again, every single one of these but VII has been corrected via more recent remakes, some of them more than once.

Furthermore, note that "classic naming" is not one of the reasons given for this by Fernehalwes, because it's simply not true. If it were, which would be incredibly stupid because it was only done due to character limitations, you wouldn't see "Thunder III," you'd see "LIT3" or "Bolt 3."
