I don't know about you, but last I checked Cleveland gladly begged Lebron James to go back to them and all the groveling Miami did was completely fruitless. The pay out the big salaries because they are begging for the players. Some team owners forget that and start acting like morons like Donald Sterling.

So there is no misunderstanding of the term.

Businesses primary purposes is to make money. Paying someone a hefty sum of money means that said business (the sport team in this example) is confident on having a good ROI. To discuss the amout of said sum of money, it requires two party to sit together and talk, that's called a negotiation process, not begging.
