I totally agree. It doesn't have to be like WoW, since that's what everyone seems to be complaining about. This could be done really well, and be a lot of fun.Questing, underwater fishing, reaching otherwise inaccessible areas... like some kind of sunken temple/ruins which would be a dungeon or a place where to find some rare NM. Once in the temple you wouldn't be swimming or in the water anymore.... at least not the whole time, there might be some areas of the dungeons where you still need to swim.
There is a lot of possibilities, take a look at what the others posted, there is some nice ideas here. I'm not saying they should absolutely not add fighting but it seems more people are against it because other games failed at that. Of course if SE could make underwater fighting fun and have it really well done then i'm all for it.
It would enhance the gameplay just like jumping would.

This is a short video I made that shows how jumping/falling/swimming/underwater battle could be like in XIV. Taken from EQ2.
*edit* the slow falling is due to a Safe Fall character trait.

I would be for it but their current engine doesn't support it, They would have to reprogram and write a new program just to add that feature and it would cost a lot of money and take a lot of time and manpower to pull it off, so I don't think it is likely to happen.
Where has SE mentioned that the current engine does not support swimming or that it cannot render water? Is there an article somewhere or a statement by SE mentioning the limitation of their engine?I would be for it but their current engine doesn't support it, They would have to reprogram and write a new program just to add that feature and it would cost a lot of money and take a lot of time and manpower to pull it off, so I don't think it is likely to happen.
I'm not mocking you here, there could be but i have never heard such a thing so i'd like to know where you have this information from. Their engine is brand new and not being able to render water as someone said before you would be an enormous fail from the programmers and as for swimming it is just about the character animation, physics....
EDIT: i tried googling it and couldn't find anything regarding this kind of limitation from the Crystal tools engine. You and other before mentioned the engine's limitation as per why we will never see swimming so can anyone point me in the right direction please?

Here is some information on the engine. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crystal_Tools
SE had posted prior to FFXIV launch that the system is similar to the system of FFXI and lacked many of the same features. The jump feature is being programmed into the game(currently) and they said that was one of the reasons it wasn't going to be implemented originally and swimming falls under similar category of action. I would be surprised if it couldn't render water but like jumping certain things would have to be programmed into the system and tweeked before it would be possible.
Maybe I am wrong and maybe this is just an area they didn't want to go with the game. Or even thought of who knows. haha

Well.... if they said Crystal Tools was the reason they weren't able to have a Jump feature, but now we'll be getting one (in one form or another) it stands to reason that swimming should be possible?he jump feature is being programmed into the game(currently) and they said that was one of the reasons it wasn't going to be implemented originally and swimming falls under similar category of action.
Yes, we should be able to run, jump, walk, sit, swim, eat, ride chocobos, fly (on airships)and do all kinds of other animations and actions. How does this not expand the game, and why would you not want the diversity?
I saw that wiki and I see nothing that mentions it being similar to FFXI's engine. It states also that the engine was first used for FFXIII. I see not relation with FFXI. Neither do I see anything said about jump not being there or possible. Here is some information on the engine. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crystal_Tools

Did SE say jumping is currently being programmed into the game? All I remember seeing is them saying they are considering adding jump flowing a ppositive review.
Don't mean to start an argument but where do you get all that info? Are you making it up?
Lol. Different sources and fan sites via interviews with SE, like I said I just remember SE in some sort of interview prior launch saying the system(not engine, but the way the game is designed around, actions etc) was based on FFXI system. The link I gave you was just information about Crystal Tools in general, it isn't as new as you think since it was originally designed to be used for a ps2 game but decided to wait til the next gen to use it.
Do I have a link to this old post? No way in hell, I remember reading it nearly a year ago. Not really sure why I remembered that either, guess it was because at that time they was asking if jump/swim feature was being added to 14 and that was their reply.
Come on, i want to hear more people supporting underwater and swimming!
