Well the problem with that is an account can have characters on multiple servers.

The problem at its core is that the ward system is far too limiting on the amount of players that can simply have them. Even if free companies where to never buy another house for some reason, there's hardly enough available plots for one percent of the playerbase by the time 2.4 comes out.

Err. 1 house per person per server, characters on like-servers share. The ward system *shouldn't* be limited; Lord of the Rings Online does something extremely similar and it works perfectly.

I agree, but there's clearly something wrong if they can't provide us with ample room and have to slowly leak them out while STILL competing with Free Companies. Doubling it won't be enough.
This is something that should have been considered when they designed it in the first place. It's a feature that a lot of people really want, they should have been sure that the system could handle having room for people, or developed a new one that their weird servers can handle. Just slapping them together with FCs and giving us a few more wards seems like a cheap and lazy approach. Having a hefty cost is alright, that's achievable (much as I would have liked to be warned ahead of time about the cost). But not having enough room is a block that can't be so easily dealt with.

I suspect its all the individual outdoor customizations that we have causing problems. Lotro only needs to track two data points for each lot: state of ownership and who owns it. FFXIV needs to track far more in addition to those two data points: windows, walls, doors, roof, stables, gardens and all the outdoor furniture.
