As someone else mentioned, ArcheAge goes live today at 1pm EST. The housing is all open world and most of it doesn't even require money (to purchase), that which does is completely reasonable. The main currency for housing is Gilda Stars which you earn by doing some quests and delivery missions. Overall, if you want that open world old school MMO feel with an amazing housing system, ArcheAge is a good game to try.

Housing does require you to pay taxes weekly or bi-weekly however, which is good, since it is all open world so there is limited real estate for it. There is plenty of room for housing however- plenty of room for those actively playing.

Yeah. If they are going to only let the elite few own houses, go ahead and make it a bidding war so that it gets rid of larger amounts of gil. This game's economy is fucked anyhow. There's WAY too many ways to generate gil now. It all basically comes down to the devs being unwilling to spend the money on tons of housing servers, which I'm sure aren't cheap.

To the people mentioning Archage... that game's character models look like crap.

What he said, Aion housing is really good, everyone gets their own free studio and then you can get bigger houses with in-game money. You have to pay a maint fee (weekly? monthly? i don't recall) if you don't, your house goes into auction for the rest of the players (and you get whatever money they push for your house).
Haven't played Wildstar but for what i'm told NCsoft took all the good Aion features and even improved them.

I know pretty much every player housing system has customizable interior instances, but how many of them have customizable non-instanced exterior areas?

I suspect the fact that XIV does have customizable exteriors is what is causing the development team trouble.

Level 14 doesn't sound like it's too much of an investment. I'll check out some videos later when I get home see if it appeals to me.

That screenshot I assume is form Archeage. It does look pretty good, but if the character models are indeed not aesthetically pleasing might have to skip it.

    Lord of the Rings Online.

Housing instances in four different varieties, based on location/race. Each instance has 30 houses - 4x FC, 10x Deluxe, 16x Standard. Once housing sells out of any given type of the three houses, a new empty instance automatically spawns. Your house is accessible by all characters on your account on that server. There is a chest that works as shared inventory/storage between your characters. Customise garden, interior, furniture and background music.

Downsides were that furnishings couldn't be freely placed (though that wasn't so bad) and that you paid rent instead of purchasing (though that worked well because if you stopped logging in it freed your house up for other players).

This is how it was in 2008 anyhow. Would have hoped a AAA subscription MMO would have been able to take the best of that design and move forward, but hry.

    Wildstar Wildstar Wildstar Wildstar Wildstar!!!

Best housing I have seen. Just youtube it, players have done some AMAZING things with it. I know there are some other comparable ones out there but of the MMO's I have played Wildstar's is BY FAR the best I have ever come across. I didnt expect for Yoshi to have that kind of vision for housing but this rehashed LotRO version we got is just pathetic.

TOR has reasonable housing. It's not great, not terrible.

The furniture is all based on a hook system so you can't freely place your stuff. It's also expensive, unless you use the real money shop, in which case no in game cash but pretty pricey to the player. A lot of nice things also only drop in instances, do you'd really need to get a character levelled to max to be able to make use of it.

Having played both, ffxiv has a lot more freedom and housing is something which would benefit from a real money shop (purely cosmetic, no in game advantage etc ).
