Nikita is correct, if you're playing on one of the servers from CB1 the land is pretty much maxed, but if you start on one of the newer servers there's still plenty of space available.Land has been taken on the most populous of the servers, I have friends on less populated servers who say there is still land left. Auroria is also opening in a months time with more land. Also, two new servers have just been opened. That's two worlds with zero homes built.
RIFT not only gives you a house, but an entire zone to work with (Called a Dimension) pretty epic honestly and not too pricey.

Was never fond of rifts dimensions, as any good ones were always locked behind spending a lot more money than the average monthly sub
Then again is take rift dimensions over this mess anyday

Oh wow I loved rifts and I had a max character there! That's one I regretted leaving too!! That I might have to check back out.

My favorite housing system was in Vanguard. This game came out in 2007. Everything was open world. The ONLY loading done was to enter the end-game dungeons. Leaving a city to explore outside, no loading. The housing areas were open world as well.
Step 1: Buy land.
Step 2: Craft your house. You actually built your house from the ground up. You would either craft housing mats yourself or buy them from the market.
Each continent had it's own architecture styles which determined how your house would look. You had an Asian themed architecture, a Medieval Europe version, and a desert version, like Egyptian style I'd say. When your house was built, you could open your door and go inside. Again, no loading. You also had lawns where you could build and place things outside as long as it was on your bought land. The biggest complaint I heard was that the windows were opaque.
Funnier still is that these housing zones shared the land with guild HQs. I have never once heard of any server excuses or not enough land. The housing areas were huge.

I wanna say EQ2 housing because I did have a lot of fun with it during the games opening days I remember. I won't comment about it now since I no longer play it.
Now Wildstar housing is something I will comment on because I adore it. Its sorta a pseudo open world instanced system. Players can choose who they would like as their neighbors and we can see our neighbors homes in the sky. Total freedom of building with a private land that equates to maybe one quarter of an entire XIV ward. The devs adopted a Minecraft feel to it where everything can be placed as you want, on whatever angle you want, even objects sizes can be adjusted. Want to build an upside down house? You can if you want.Which led to a lot of creativity in player housing. Some players even going as far to build their house without using the default models. Very few limits on what can be done. Players have even taken their lands and built hoverboard race tracks on them all 100% from scratch. No restrictions on what can go indoors or what can go outdoors. The sky can be changed and soon the housing music can even be changed.
This is not even getting into the challenge FABkits and dungeon expedition FABkits. Yes certain FABkits will put instanced dungeons on your land.

EverQuest II probably has the housing system I like the most. Even the small homes were only a few silver a month. And you don't lose the house, and everything you've put in it if you don't log on at the pay period. All you have to do is just go to your personal house and pay the fee then.
Sadly, it's a shame that $OE has the worst free-to-play program out there.

Kinda, but it happens in layers. On reaching level 15 players get a quest in Thayd if you're playing as Exile that is. Its the same quest as Dominion though. To talk to the Protostar housing agent and that's it for the land and away you go to either spend one gold for the small house or build your own. I say the level requirement happens in layers because certain decor does require you to be at a certain level as does placing certain FABkits. At level 40 if I remember right is when players can opt to buy the large house upgrade if they're using the default house. In the extreme end of things certain decor and FABkits are locked behind clearing certain content to buy or place.
If you're more curious I made a small tour video of ours. Its very simplistic really as of now and my only claim to Minecraft fame is building the outdoor BBQ and bar area and placing the staircase and flooring tiles on the second floor of the house. ^o^

In all seriousness.. Stop looking at MMOs for solo player games.
SIMS
or through the power of google.... http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/10-g...me-room-193704
Newer players to MMO games will likely draw from their experiences playing FPS games, GTA, Dragon Age, Skyrim, etc.. and they will evaluate a MMO based on that criteria. But other online games (and offline RPGs) are designed to be picked up, played for maybe 5 months and then abandoned for when the next big game comes along. A Veteran MMO gamer knows that the experience of the game is stretched out over years, and if crafted properly, it leaves players with some of the best gaming experiences to be found anywhere. This is the problem most content is solo and you get your group action from a cross-server queueing tool. This is not like older MMOs where servers developed real communities. It's more like MacDonald's Drive-Thru, where you queue up, do your run, then never meet those people again.
