Other MMOs/Games with good housing systems?

I played LOTRO for a short while but don't think I ever made it to housing. I didn't put much stock in it because I did play a lot of DDO and from what I recall of DDO's version (airships) it didn't seem to have much customization to it. Plus I really enjoyed DDO :P I'll have to see if I still have my account information for it.

TOR has reasonable housing. It's not great, not terrible.

The furniture is all based on a hook system so you can't freely place your stuff. It's also expensive, unless you use the real money shop, in which case no in game cash but pretty pricey to the player. A lot of nice things also only drop in instances, do you'd really need to get a character levelled to max to be able to make use of it.

Having played both, ffxiv has a lot more freedom and housing is something which would benefit from a real money shop (purely cosmetic, no in game advantage etc ).

I played TOR at launch, had a couple characters almost to cap if I recall. Ended up quitting because my friends who were playing quit. Might log in and check it out. I don't mind paying real money, so that's not too much of an issue. When I did DDO I was paying monthly and still usually dropped $100 a month on the game, lol.

I actually really liked the instanced apartments in EQ2, could range from a dive that you got as party of storyline, all the way up to a luxury condo. You could get pets that would randomly wander around inside, lore achievements could be redeemed for books you'd place on bookshelves then could read again later. Really easy to use to, just go apartment building for area you wanted, it'd show you the weekly rent and deposit, you pay deposit and it's yours. If friend wanted to come over, they just search for your characters name at building, then they could knock or come in if you set permissions.

Archeage has a nice one, but the downside is, people can raid your crops I believe.
Anyone can chime in here but I think that's what they said. Kinda turned off at that
point...but your house is safe?

In AA, if you build your house/farm in a pvp zone,it can be raided & destroyed but if its built in
a pve zone it cannot be raided. If you're thinking of trying this game these few days, be warned
the queue times is horrible lol

So I just came back from AA forums. All land is taken already and F2P access hasn't even started.

Lord of the Rings Online.

Housing instances in four different varieties, based on location/race. Each instance has 30 houses - 4x FC, 10x Deluxe, 16x Standard. Once housing sells out of any given type of the three houses, a new empty instance automatically spawns. Your house is accessible by all characters on your account on that server. There is a chest that works as shared inventory/storage between your characters. Customise garden, interior, furniture and background music.

Downsides were that furnishings couldn't be freely placed (though that wasn't so bad) and that you paid rent instead of purchasing (though that worked well because if you stopped logging in it freed your house up for other players).

This is how it was in 2008 anyhow. Would have hoped a AAA subscription MMO would have been able to take the best of that design and move forward, but hry.

I'm glad someone else brought up how awesome LotRO's housing was. I didn't mind paying rent. It wasn't a huge fee, and acted as a continual money sink, helping keep the economy stable. Plus, being able to customize the music that played in your house? Priceless.

Land has been taken on the most populous of the servers, I have friends on less populated servers who say there is still land left. Auroria is also opening in a months time with more land. Also, two new servers have just been opened. That's two worlds with zero homes built.
