I kinda feel like being able to lose cards - while an interesting mechanic - would just discourage people from using their 'good' cards, or possibly even playing at all.

They could have different card rules so players can choose before the start of each match if they want to play for an opponent's card or if its more like a friendly match where you don't win or lose any cards. I would definitely play for cards though, makes it more thrilling and exciting.
Just have us build points from playing matches, which can be used to buy good cards. This will encourage people more.
I thought I should mention to people of this thread, a Triple Triad indie website existed for a long time (maybe it still does) with people playing the game in flash or something. They had decks for every game made up. The veteran players figured out precise combos of decks that were extremely difficult to beat by how numbers arranged/the cards could be placed down, or decks designed for usage with Same/Plus/Wall rules and etc. The meta reached ridiculous levels and a bunch of the oldest players just had 90%+ win rates and gobbled any newb who showed up. Not many new folks stayed to play as a result. The population dropped from hundreds daily to just being the same dozen people forever and ever, and anyone new was almost instantly discouraged by the extreme reaming they got.
I just hope that sort of pattern doesn't happen in 14 as well.
I believe that in the last Live Letter that they mentioned the desire for a card game, they said one of the things they wanted to do was include the ability to do exactly that. (Specifically, challenging Minfilia was mentioned)
Thats the whole point in the card game. If you played FFVIII and you used a Squall card, if you lost it and didnt have the cards to get it back...its gone forever.
Also since this is a MMO, there would be a endless amount of cards, even if some are rare there will more than ONE.
If you can't lose your cards then there isn't the challenge and its just a collecting sidegame.
I'm pretty sure in FFVIII you could rechallenge the npc and get your card back, either at that moment or coming back later when you have better cards.Thats the whole point in the card game. I don't get how the card game is the only thing people liked enough out of VIII that they put it in near half of the following titles...
That save game function, though.Thats the whole point in the card game. If you played FFVIII and you used a Squall card, if you lost it and didnt have the cards to get it back...its gone forever.

Can't just press the reset button and reload your game to get your card back in FFXIV.
Wish they had made a new game like they originally said instead of just reusing an older one.
