I kinda feel like being able to lose cards - while an interesting mechanic - would just discourage people from using their 'good' cards, or possibly even playing at all.

Thats the whole point in the card game. If you played FFVIII and you used a Squall card, if you lost it and didnt have the cards to get it back...its gone forever.
Also since this is a MMO, there would be a endless amount of cards, even if some are rare there will more than ONE.

If you can't lose your cards then there isn't the challenge and its just a collecting sidegame.

I'm pretty sure in FFVIII you could rechallenge the npc and get your card back, either at that moment or coming back later when you have better cards.

Not only that but you could even mod the cards and then win them back again in disc 4.

I like that they're basing the card game on Triple Triad and not Tetra Master. Hated the randomness in that one.

That save game function, though.

Can't just press the reset button and reload your game to get your card back in FFXIV.
