Never-mind motives, journalists should rely on facts. If the reviewer did his due diligence, he would have known there was a major patch coming on the 21st or soon after. this makes one of two things true:

The interviewer was well aware of the patch situation, actually stated as much in the review (second paragraph if you're wondering) and gives a perfectly reasonable explanation why there is no sense in waiting for yet another patch (that would likely have been included in the review if it wouldn't have been delayed yet again), given that with the many changes to the core of the games mechanics, 1.18 is likely to break almost as much as it's going to fix, so we'll have to wait yet another patch until things are "the way they are supposed to be so they can be reviewed".

You got to draw the line somewhere.

3: looking at the pictures in the review, the writer didn't even bother playing the game, given that they're all from the first hour of gameplay.

So "aware" that she defines it "rumors" lol. The "explanation" not only isn't "perfectly reasonable" (lol), but it flies in the face of logic and journalistic integrity.
They waited (for some obscure reason) ten months for the review, it's utterly idiotic to wait ten months and then publish at the worst possible time.

The delay of the patch has nothing to do with the publishing of the review, otherwise she wouldn't have defined it "rumors".

10 months? LOL.

There are only two kind (not mutually exclusive) of times in which posting a review of a MMORPG is relevant.

1: in a reasonably short timeframe past release to allow the reviewer to play the game enough to form an opinion about it
2: AFTER the game has been patched enough to warrant a second look with different results compared to the first review

Ten months after release and right before a string of major patches is not part of that group, as the review becomes irrelevant and misleading right after it's published. That tends to be bad since reviews are made to inform, not to mislead.

For instance now it's the right time to re-review EVE Online or Age of Conan, because both underwent massive changes that warrant a new look and a completely new judgement. Final Fantasy XIV is not there yet, and posting a review now is completely unprofessional.

1.18 is being released in 4 days, would it kill them to wait 4 days to see ihe FIRST major patch, anyone that does this is just a bad journalist and should be fired on the spot.

It would be like saying a football team is the worse team that ever existed the day before they get a huge cash injection and buy a lot of world class players and start to move up the legue.

Or saying a PC is useless because it had outdated hardware when you are going to upgrade it the next day.

The review defies all logic and should never have been put up, maybe after 1.18 but not 4 fucking days before a GAME CHANGING patch.

Btw game changing means that it is going to make the game differant whether for the better or worse the game is fucking changing. Really will 4 fucking days kill mmorpg.com?

I agree completely Abriael. Reviews are meant to inform the reader. This review 'might' do that right this minute and I'm being extremely generous. But in a few days it goes from being barely informative with a negative slant to being outright misleading. In fact in a few days time it becomes disinformation about the game.

I'm not saying that 1.18 will change every aspect of that review but given that the game is admittedly not in great shape and that they're working on bringing it up to par (hopefully just post 1.20) if you've been reading the Letter's from the Producer, reviewing it now is predestined to have a negative answer and serves only to intentionally attempt to further bury the game. This review is the equivalent of kicking someone while they're down. If that was the aim of the review than it was a well written success. Otherwise, it was nonsense.
