It's been awhile since I have played FFXI. Either way, it is the same as what I meant. When the player hits that zone for the city, the game could just force them to dismount, losing their rental.


It would work, not sure which would need less programming because an invisible wall would need to be drawn over the gate. Either way I dont mind which tehy choose, as long as you can only ride them to the chocobo stables furthest
I only mentioned it the way I did so that we could keep immersion intact rather than just having our chocobos ramming against invisible walls.


All the chocobo stables are currently a good bit into each city's zone. Without the benefit of the zoning-fade-to-black that we had in FFXI, I'm not sure how the Development Team will be able to pull off the actually mounting and dismounting process within cities.
