In a world where you can get shot a couple dozen times it sort of evens out the playing field.
Not exactly true. It seems to me like (if you watched the post Leviathan cutscene) Rogue is what became when the Ninja girl was talking to the thieves about merging their fighting styles into one. It's extremely believable that the two classes that fused their fighting style (Thief and Ninja) will be the two specializations of said fused class (Rogue).
The only disappointment this brings to me is I just plain don't see the point in 2 dps branching from a single class.. The reason SCH and SMN work well from ACN is because one is forced to choose a stat to put points into, making the other not be your focus. Seems odd to me that you could have a single stat dump and essentially support two jobs with one class (minus some gear)

No, Yoshida said that thieves wouldn't make sense (what city would allow a guild of theives to run around?) and evolved into rogues, kind of like how marauders used to be pirates. Not exactly true. Jobs don't have guilds. Classes do. Theres no paladin guild. The paladins decided to start teaching their style to select individuals. Theres no Scholar guild. A matter of circumstances led you to your fairy. This can be said about every job in the game. All it takes is some single person offering to teach you in the art of Thievery based on you skillset.
"The classes in XIV has their own story. We thought thieves would be too petty to fit into the other guilds with great heroes. The Rogue guild USED to be thieves like how the Marauders used to be pirates, but they've evolved into something much different over time. If you think about it, why would a city allow thieves to run rampant?"Jobs don't have guilds. Classes do. Theres no paladin guild. This is from the translated transcript of the live letter. There will more than likely not be a thief job.
Just like 'there will be no Scholar. Thats arcanist in that AF!' We'll see with time."The classes in XIV has their own story. All you did was quote that Thief won't be a guild, which I agree with. I still think it will be a job. And to be fair... Pirate could eventually be a job, too. Its not so hard to believe that an NPC can teach the ways of a dead Job that no longer exists in the world (SCHOLAR)
Keep in mind, there are a lot of gaming conventions this time of year. Most likely, Musketeer is being saved for Gamescom in August. The big American convention gets one class/job, the Europeans get the other. Honestly, it's the most fair way to do things, especially since the expansion will likely be revealed at the Japanese fan fest.
-snip- Post with bad info, disregard.
It's not a dead job. Rogues came from Thieves. It's in their backstory. There's nothing to teach, they are all for all intents and purposes reformed thieves. The Scholar comparison isn't even close, Scholars didn't evolve into Arcanist. The Scholar art was just lost, and the Arcanists were the only ones astute enough to find it (actually it was a warrior but whatever).Just like 'there will be no Scholar. Thats arcanist in that AF!' We'll see with time.
