This would happen regardless of what new class they implement. It will happen literally every time in the future any new class/job is released. I watched this happen 100% of the time in FFXI when new jobs came out on day one.

Yoshi: THF wouldn't work in Eorzea, so it's called Rogue instead. No thieves.

Forums: THF will still happen it will be a job and this is how it will/should happen!

It's an excuse. A bad one that can be picked apart in ten seconds flat with little effort. They don't want to add Thief at this time plain and simple, if they did it takes literally no effort to work it in story wise. In the future who knows, but it will be a long time before Rogue gets a second job.

As for the Pirate comment, it's called privateers. State sanctioned piracy, or land based theft I suppose. The idea that a group of thieves friendly to their local government is impossible is just silly. Those types of men have been very useful to societies throughout history, or at least the other men who offer them enough. Take a look at our dear Admiral, do you think she would shy from a bit of larceny or the like?

That's a load of crap, for lack of better words. Granted, thieves wouldn't fit as a city-sanctioned guild. The writers could easily insert underground organizations and use that as a "thieves' guild" for the job quests. That being, a collective of thieves that operate independently and at times against established authority, not unlike Avalanche and Tantalus.

You could even justify their presence in-game and interactions with other adventurers by using the treasure-hunting background that Locke was so in love with while still leaving them able to pester rich despots Robin Hood style (I've mentioned it before, but Ul'dah is a PERFECT setting for something like this).

    Here's some fanfiction:
The player character and a street urchin of Ul'dah find a wounded female miqo'te in an alley. The urchin has you help find a place for the wounded miqo'te to rest and slowly recover. While the urchin is out of ear shot, the miqo'te starts telling you about an organization called the Thieves' Guild that has been around for decades, and how she's now the sole survivor after the other members were ambushed/killed by agents of lord Lolorito. She knowingly leads the urchin into taking care of her while hiding her real identity. At the same time, she has you doing the dirty work in discovering who ordered the hit and details behind the attack (since she wants revenge for what happened to the guild). In exchange for your help, she agrees to start you on the path to becoming a Thief, giving you the Soul of the Thief to unlock your potential.

I just made that up in about 15 minutes.

I guess its all context its not that thieves wouldnt work, but a guild of thieves would be rather counter intuitive for a city. I'll keep the dream alive, but Id be lying if I said I wasnt hyped for Ninja.

Does it really matter whether it's called Thief, Rogue, or Super Fast Slicey Dicey man? It's like... the same thing.

Also if they wanted to make it dex well.. It wouldn't be that hard. Just make Dex part of its damage formula instead of STR. The description is just text information that can be changed, the actual damage formula is all that would really matter and they had to make that when they made the class/job. It could use int for damage and swing a sword if they wanted it to.

But I do agree with the idea of STR since thats what we have so far. It will probably share dungeon gear with monk or something. Dunno i'm more curious about the mudra skills.

Wait... Why would there need to be a Thieves Guild? Jobs don't have Guilds...

There was no Warriors Guild. The Marauders Guild sent you to investigate something, and the Warrior NPC was also there and you went under his wing.
Scholar was literally just doing research on Nym for a Marauder, you just happened to discover Scholar along the way.
Summoner was helping a researcher from the city the Scions are from.
Pugilist? "You're a good Pugilist, go help this researcher, oh and a Monk is with him".

    All they need to do is something like;

Rouges Guild NPC>> Go track down this Thief that stole from us.
Thief>> Hey, why don't I teach you to be a real Thief?

    Done.

The only thing stopping Thief from being introduced is making it actually work while still recognizably being Thief, though the gear the Rouge is wearing does make me doubtful as to whether they'll even bother.

No it wasn't. That quite simply does not fit with XIVs Class naming conventions. The Japanese name them after there form of combat, for the rest of us it's a generalization of what the Class is, in this case someone who uses poisons; a rouge. They do that so that they can leave Classes open to as many Jobs as possible, Rouge => Thief is no different than Thaumaturge/Gladiator/Marauder => Dark Knight, or any potential Jobs you could fit onto the current Classes. They've always gone with Jobs being the popularized core (sorry Tactics fans) Final Fantasy Jobs, they were never going to make the Thief the Class just so we could go "JUST LIKE FINAL FANTASY I HURHUR!".

You're really grasping at the straws of hope and I understand it. But it's called Rogue and frankly.. it really doesn't matter what it's called as long as it plays like a thief anyway.
Rouges are not strictly con men... They've used plenty of tools across the fantasy genre, commonly poisons or traps, and certainly daggers/short swords in combination with stealth.

Thief, in the fantasy setting at least, usually avoids killing completely, and the aim in most Thief based games is to pull off a job without being noticed at all. That's why some people hate such games, there is very little killing. Rouges on the other hand, don't shy away from killing when needed.
