I loved XI (yes, really) and this game is definitely, 100% not "FFXI all over again"

I agree with the dull direction. But the dull direction SE is taking FFXIV is nothing like FFXI. The comparison is just flat wrong.

The game is almost a year in, there is a lot of content so far in this game. Every patch is just going to expand on things to do, in this world of Eorzea.
I play this game for the story, and getting my self "gear ready" as the next part of the story comes out. This is an MMO, there has to be a grind. if you want fast, go back and play a single player rpg.
I can only imagine how this game will be this time next year. And anyone starting from here on out. They will have so much to do, keeping up with all the content before the next patch, before the next patch......... before the next patch, will be a task.
"You cannot simultaneously prevent and prepare for war."
Just because it's an opinion doesn't make what I said invalid. The game has issues and those issues prevent it from being a good game, just like it's boons prevent it from being a bad game.
Why do people use "that's your opinion!" in an attempt to invalidate arguments that they may not agree with?

The concept behind FATE (and similar things in other games) is just fine. The problem comes down to the player base. Once upon a time, people played games to have fun and actually do things just because. Now it's all about speed. Speed levelling. Speed token acquisition. Is there a strategy that makes a fight easier/faster? That becomes the norm. Not many want to just take their time any more and just chill.Personally if I was developing this game I would of avoided the FATE system. I mean, you know they will become less popular over time after launch. No one wants to chase these things down to level up and you can't make their xp too good else dungeons become empty. I think overall FATEs should just be redesigned into rare boss fights that spawn in the world, but that would require revamping the system. Maybe they will in the expansion? Who knows. But then again I know some people that do like FATEs, but maybe we can hope they find a middle ground with it.
I would definitely favour FATEs being the NM variety. We have some, and those are great. But even then, they'd need to have some other kind of incentive other than exp or even company seals. Unless there's a reason, no one really cares.
I didn't read that as any attempt to invalidate. Seemed more like a side comment on how people tend to vocalize opinions as some sort of fact. Your opinion isn't fact, but it isn't invalid. It's the same way the op said "im just merely stating the fact that square enix is taking this game in a boring and dull direction and its only going to get worse if they keep this route" where he literally called his opinion "fact."Just because it's an opinion doesn't make what I said invalid. The game has issues and those issues prevent it from being a good game, just like it's boons prevent it from being a bad game.

I don't quite understand what you're getting at with that. Are you saying it's a neutral game then? What does that mean? Are we supposed to have fun or not!? I always figured defining a video games appeal as "good" or "bad" was subjective to the individual. That "good" often related itself to "fun", and if that "fun" outweighed the bad, then it was considered good. If you're not having fun (considering the game as good), then why are you playing?
Once upon a time, there weren't massive multiplayer games. You just were not subjected to it by a genre. Don't kid yourself into thinking there was ever a time where games had no competitive/efficient variable to them. I was 8, and id have been damned if my friend was going to beat my time in a Mario 2 level. But i suppose i was just part of the plague, even then, as a little boy.Once upon a time, people played games to have fun and actually do things just because. Now it's all about speed. Speed levelling. Speed token acquisition. Is there a strategy that makes a fight easier/faster? That becomes the norm. Not many want to just take their time any more and just chill.
You weren't around during EQ days were you? Nothing wrong with being casual and "chill" but competitive nature of MMO's is nothing new. In fact I'd say it was much stronger in the old days of MMO's when they had WAY more grinding and rng. Fighting over spawns of a boss, bragging about world firsts etc...This is nothing new. Try spending 5 months just to get a single chest piece from a dragon in EQ with a 1% drop rate. I mean, I cant remember the last time I was in a guild that used a point system for participation. Most loot now in MMO's is based on tokens instead of drops. Back in the day if you wanted gear you had to participate and earn points put together by the guild itself and would spend those points for gear that would drop.Once upon a time, people played games to have fun and actually do things just because. Now it's all about speed. Speed levelling. Speed token acquisition. Is there a strategy that makes a fight easier/faster? That becomes the norm. They are adding dull and boring stuff to the game yes. Atmas are more or less universally hated at least by the majority.
But XI was not dull and boring and they stuff they are adding in XIV is not even close to what was in XI. So the comparison fails.
I wish I could have that dull and boring XI back again. I would never be bored again (well at least for another 8yrs or so)
