There are two kinds of people who play FFXIV:
    • Those who play 24/7.
    • Those who aren't logged in 24/7.
The people who are logged in 24/7 at the cost of friends, family, and regular exercise are really mad that the people who see the sun at least once a week will get experience a little faster to make up for the 8 hours of sleep and 40 hours of having a job and however many hours of having a social life that they're out of the game.

But don't worry, 24/7 crowd! You'll still get more overall experience! Rested experience might narrow the gap ever-so-slightly, but it'll never let people who do things other than play FFXIV 24/7 catch up to you!

never really saw the point of rested exp, hey you get exp for nothing! but whatever, exp isnt the be all and end all. maybe it will make people want to log back on. But the principle sounds kind of foolish to me.

But you don't get exp for nothing.

You get a slightly higher exp rate for a short amount of time.

If you log out at 10k tnl, you log back in at 10k tnl. All rested exp means is that if you log out for like 72 hours, you get an empress band effect (where you gain +10% experience for your first 5k experience or so).

I have to thank Square-Enix for the amazing job they have done recreating Final Fantasy XIV from Scratch. Especially the inclusion of Missing Genders which we petitioned for in good faith. This was proof to us players that the Developers are truly Sympathetic to our requests and that being honest and vocal can pay off with the amazing characters we have who are Female Roegadyn, Male Miqote, and Female Highlanders. Thank You SE, Thank You Community Team, Thank You Yoshi-P.

Well this IS the surplus system we currently have, just set up slightly different. This is not so bad, I understood it the way Physic did also, which would be absurd. I initially took it to mean that you would gain whatever small amount of XP over time while not logged into the game, meaning that if you logged for 72 hours at 10k tnl, when you came back you would be 9.7k tnl or something. But the way Caerith has explained it would be more than reasonable and as I said above, it is basically what we have now...

Terrible idea. It undermines hardcore playing just like fatigue does. Use something with a cooldown like a exp band, or a universal form of Guardian's Aspect (This would be cool). That way players aren't rewarded for NOT playing, but rather rewarded for being patient.

Admittedly I play too much and I'd like to see the grind a bit easier so I can play less. But I don't think giving people things for free is the best route. Why not just shave 10 or 20% off the TNR numbers? That way you're still working for every SP but everyone benefits.

I'm not really sure what you mean by that. But either way, I disagree, as the player will NOT be getting anymore SP while they are absent from the game for an extended period of time. It really isn't 'free' exp if they still need to go out and kill monsters in order to get that extra SP. Just think of the bonus SP as an extended version of Guardian's Aspect without having to be doing a leve.

Eventually, the person who played non-stop (or brief stops) will still be ahead of the person who went absent, no matter how much extra SP they have. They merely have a timed boon towards their gain, nothing more. It won't be just plunked right into their amount, but merely a buff. So it's not free. Free is when the character does nothing, and they still get SP, like 1 SP per day they're not logged in. THAT I do not want. From what I'm getting, they're merely placing it as a buff, so instead of earning 300SP from a kill, for a limited time depending on how long you were absent, you get 500-600SP. (CASE ONLY, NOT REAL, MERELY OPINION)
