here is the deal, in DF i refer to ppl as classes cuz i dont read their names or look at them to see gender, since all classes and jobs are male words i refer to them as he regardles of their gender, race, species or whatever they are.
I know I assume that other players in the game are male until being told or shown otherwise. Character gender aside, it's mostly guys playing the game, so most of the time that assumption is going to be right.
If it bothers you, just correct people. I'm sure no one means any offense by it.
Except it's NOT a safe bet. Roughly 1/3 of the playerbase is female.
Methinks it would be interesting to start referring to everyone (including male characters) as she just to see how people react when the shoe's on the other foot.
Using the old census on character gender the distribution its 51(M)/49(F) for Japanese players and 60(M)/40(F) for NA/EU now these statistics are relatively outdated as they were taken from August to September last year. The problem here is what % of people play a character with the same gender as they are. I would also assume that a larger percentage play the same gender as they are in the western world which is what leads to a 60/40 split towards males as they are the majority.
I remember back in the FFXI days that a very large percentage of Mithra were male players so much so the phrase Manthra became popular. So I wouldn't be surprised if the same follows on to the Mi'qote.
Following these rules when 60% are male characters and I would hazard a safe bet that atleast half of the female characters are played by males and discounting a smaller percentage of males played by females (as females are the minority) you could be looking at something as high as a 70% playerbase of male people. Making it completely justified to assume someone is male until corrected since you have a 7/10 chance of being correct.
Now furthermore you would have to be an extreme minority as a transgender since you are already a minority within a minority group. It also springs up further debate in since you are transgender some people might think it is still more factually correct to refer to you as your birth gender so referring to you as a "he" is still technically correct.

you will be at the second boss of brayflox by the time anyone even bothers reading that. The only way to avoid upsetting someone would be to start each party by saying:
"Hi all, could I just hold the run up for a minute or two and ask what sex you all are in real life? I just don't want to upset any sensitive people by calling them she when they're a he or he when they're a she".
Dropping this because I found it funny and slightly related
It doesn't express any of my thoughts on the subject, just wanted to bring smiles on some faces hehe

This has actually happened to me a few times, no idea what for. Maybe the A at the end of my surname just makes people automatically think female, or maybe I just dance emote too much.Methinks it would be interesting to start referring to everyone (including male characters) as she just to see how people react when the shoe's on the other foot.
Either way I didn't get my undies in a twist about it. Unlike how some folks would have you believe, mis-pronouning me did NOT cause another Dalamud to start falling.
On the list of things to get offended about this is about #3728. Just under being creeped out by lalafells.
Don't take it personal.

Okay I think I said it enough, but seriously, don't take it personal. People don't know you IRL, they certainly don't know your gender, even if your character is named appropriately. In a game where there are so many possibilities, its not accurate to assume that all people play the correct gender as their IRL self. MANY guys play female characters, and there are females who play male characters.
Since English does not have neutral gender words like some other languages do, people tend to default to "he". Using "they" is not as correct sounding, since it indicates plural (as in, more than one).
So yeah, don't take it personal. They're not out to get you by calling you "he". There isn't some conspiracy out there to hurt your feelings or anything.
Me? Yeah I'm female and I play a male character, and get called "he" all the time. I don't even correct people anymore lol. It doesn't really bother me one way or another if they get genders correctly.
