    Go fight Hali in Haukke Manor Hard and watch your HP when you get hit by her full powered Void Thunder spell. You want casters to TANK that damage with their lower HP totals while the real tanks just explode? Any one else have examples of just how bad this idea can be? That's the only one off the top of my head since I farm that place regularly.

    You can place every attack considered magical there. Remember we also have cast interruptions.

    You talk about realism in a game where you got people throwing spells at each other, dragons fly around and we got magicical technology like teleport en straight up rezzes.

    I do remember at least one boss in wow which had to be tanked by a mage which was pretty fun.

    True enough, though in her case after her first devour she can't be cast interrupted. While that isn't true for everything, what happens when you get a resist on an interrupt?

    OP your suggestion of differences in defense is already in the game, you are just comparing mages to the wrong classes. Tanks are supposed to have high mag and phy defense but if you compare BLM/SMN to other dps classes, you will see that casters actually do excel at magical defense. A more proper comparison would be a DRG, which is a very physical oriented dps, DRGs take little dmg from physical attacks but much higher dmg from magical attacks than casters.

    It looks something like this:

    BLM/SMN/WHM/SCH: high mag def, low phy def

    BRD/MNK: med mag def, med phy def

    DRG: low mag def, high phy def

    WAR/PLD: high mag def, high phy def

    Oh, no. The interrupts I meant are the ones BLM/SMN can receive after suffering an attack, which make the situation even worse!

    For those of you who has trouble separating yourself from "real" and "fantasy". Games in a "fantasy" setting are for all purposes, a "fantasy" book given computer graphics. It still needs to be "believably real".

    They can drop magic defense drastically and do the following to compensate.
    1. Slow down mob magic attacks in both cast and recast time.
    2. Give each casting class some form of "remote" magic defense they can cast on the tank. BLM Apocatastasis is such a form. We used to have whm "Shell" too.
    -> Idea here is to have a mage boost tank magic defense drastically but temporarily to take those attacks.

    ...But Yoshi-P forbids anything that needs the players to use their brains to do, so we won't get any mechanics like this.

    Or you know...the tank can pop a drastically improved magic potion to increase the "appropriate" magic defense...
    -> But then the tanks have to spend gil to tank, much like Archers/Brds used to need to spend gil for damage....and people shouted UNFAIR! <-

    You are comparing different types of games. FF style RPGs do not have set tanks. Everyone is a damage dealer. In that case, yes, different types of damage dealers should be more resistant to their damage types. However, MMORPGs are a completely different beast. What you are proposing will completely break the current combat system.
