What she was referring to was how Tanaka explicitly stated that he designed FFXI to be what they couldn't do with FFIII due to technology limitations. He was inspired by EQ and felt that FFIII would be the perfect candidate for an online FF title. FFII comes into play by the weapon system used in the game.

There's so much hate and loathing for FFXI (especially from those who never played it or played it for a small period of time) yet it not only paid for this mess of a project, it's literally what kept Square's games rolling in for more than 5 years. XI isn't a demon, it's actually how XIV should have been made on the basic of levels.

I agree... FFXI was awesome... but the numbers (While profitable) weren't enough for SE... Maybe that was their biggest mistake... but they saw offline FF titles doing 6 to 10 million each and saw FFXI expansions doing a quarter mill at best....
I know, I know... Offline and online are different
But they also saw Warcraft III (an offline game) do 3.5 mill but then the online game of the franchise (WoW) Did 12 million... with absolutely no Japanese playerbase...

Yes, SE failed to learn anything from FFXI.... But I can see what they were thinking...
SE is the Republican party and FFXI is like their George Bush.... You have to distance yourself from him because his approval rating was so low....
And therein lies the problem... SE used the same races from FFXI.... and in almost every other facet... in all the interviews.. they explicitly said "This game is definitely not FFXI" as if to say "OK, millions of people can buy it now"

What they failed to realize is that FFXI didn't fail on its own merit....
It was ahead of its time... At a time when Online games were still for the basement nerds...
It used a hard drive that no one owned and the PS2 Slim didn't even support
But there were parts of FFXI that did turn people away....
FFXI-2 would do even less numbers than the original no matter how good it looked (See WoW: Cataclysm)

Before you flame me... I agree FFXI was revolutionary and many many things should have been, if not carried directly over, they at least should have been used to inspire the systems and mechanics of this game...
The 3 major selling points of 11 were that it was story driven... that it had MANY NM's... and that it had so much to do that you just couldn't get it all done, that was made up of end game areas that were made to be extremely repeatable... challenging and fun

Peoples main gripe (I swear to God if someone mentions an AH, which I'm neither for or against, I just think it wont save or sink this game and is not a priority so shut your mouth) is why certain features are missing in this game... when FFXi had really functional ways of doing them....
Like to attack the same MOB as a party member, there should be an easier way to do this, and it just so happens that FFXI had /assist....

So I understand where people are coming from when they say copy FFXI.. I just think the wording of that puts a lot of people off... because copy means clone....
Yes YOU can say you'd play FFXI-2 but SE is not pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into a 500,000 max player base.... deal with it
