Im sure its easy to hide special locations when the world maps were endless hellscapes of nothing, and the secret areas were too.

Merge all current zones into one endless zone and you pretty much have endless hellscapes of nothing again with a few places to look at here and there.
Whereas one version had "soft" zone-lines so you didn't feel like you were changing locations, the new version has "hard" zone-lines so you know when you've changed locations.
Divide up 1.0's areas based upon the soft zone-lines and you pretty much have areas of the same size as 2.0's but with more of them. Give all of 2.0's areas soft zone-lines, it's the reverse and basicly the same as 1.0 but without as much space.
Some people like it that way, some don't, whatever floats your boat. I personally have nothing against hard zone-lines, I played FFXI for 8 years and never once complained about them.
*EDIT*
I also forgot to mention, 80% of those copy pasted areas people would complain about in 1.0 were the soft zone-lines, so I'm not sure why so many people expected them to expend resources on areas where literally nothing happened.
