Who cares about purpose? Is their any purpose for anything in the game right now? Sure get to rank 50 with as many classes as you want, then what? There's no gil sinks so money is close to pointless, gear is being entirely revised so spending time or money on anything is taking a huge risk because you have no idea if that piece of gear is still going to be good or not, the NMs are worthless and mostly soloable, sidequests are a complete and utter joke (and before you ask, I've done ALL OF THEM, that's how bored I am) and leves are so repetitive that if I had to do another round of Dunesfolk for dinner I'd rather quit the game alltogether.

FFXIV's world is flat right!? I wanted to build a ship and go to the edge of the world and fall off! :P again I don't care about big cake, ships, cannons...
