It's not terrifying when the company makes old content more accessible. You know, like current FFXI or FFXIV.

It is only terrifying when people want grindy things that remain grindy. That is a recipe for a dead MMO, because it won't attract new players. At least games like FFXIV will constantly get new players to replace those who leave.

The new players will dry up. new mmos will come out. If you think a mmo will continue to get new subs at the rate of the first year you are nuts. Hell even XIV we sold what 1.5million boxes... the subs are not even close to that currently. The top end is bleeding subs. Most people quitting all say the same thing. Game was great until you hit the end then it was boring. So you are losing the top... what happens when the fresh blood dries up that was replacing them. THAT IS THE RECIPE FOR A DEAD MMO. Holding subs > getting new subs because getting new subs becomes extremely difficult as time passes in a mmo.

Better question is how long will this game last with very few new subs? XI lasted nearly 7 years with the slowest decline in mmo history because it held onto over 95% of its subs every year. XIV if the new player subs dried up would be a ghost town in about 1-2yrs.

Longevity is one thing XIV lacks. The content is not designed for it. It is short lived fun. Easily completely and thrown aside. This will send XIV into an early grave. XIV's endgame will always be shallow compared to long living mmos unless the devs drastically change development plans, which they seem to have no desire to do.
