    I think it's because you're remembering how easy it was to get Artifact armor after you got your first job to level 75 and were able to solo all the coffer keys in the dungeons and solo kill most of the bosses (some did require skill to kill at level 75) to get the level 42(?)-60 level pieces.

    Now if you tried to get them at the levels where you could actually start to wear them, forget about it being easy. With a full party of people around the same level it was quite the challenge to kill the coffer key monsters, clear the rooms where the coffers themselves were kept, and the NMs for those final pieces of gear were EXTREMELY hard to kill and took a lot of coordination with your team to bring down. In the end you were rewarded with one of the best sets of gear for your job "at that level."

    With how long it took to level up in FFXI (till around 2006 when it got a bit easier) AF gear was a primary staple for most people till level 71 when you were able to buy or quest for better gear.
