AF3? Not that hard. It's only 'real' to you because you decided it to be. The images shown by the team of content in development is the second model set created by the team. As far as the artists go, it is AF2 because it is the second model designed by them for the purpose of being tier sets, however the player does not see this visibility.

Let's take the look of the set completely out of the picture. Artistically, let us remove the entire model from the discussion. Let us look at the item itself, from one tier to the next and stack them beside each other. Then what the game tells us functions as the +1 mechanic.

For Curtana to be +1, as an upgrade, it requires Curtana and a regeant. The item is then destroyed, and given in a new state called Curtana +1. This means this is now a +1 Relic weapon.

Does this criteria apply, to our current AF1 set? Does it? So what is it we buy with Myth? Seems like an entirely new, named set to me. It doesn't even share the same name or stat scheme.

This is a new tier of AF armor. It is AF2. To think otherwise is to confuse yourselves.

As for the developer concept sketch?
(* Development screenshot—subject to change. Yes, this is a thing for a reason.)

The Myth gear IS THE EXACT SAME MODEL AS AF it is just a recolor and is stronger which is very obviously an upgraded version of AF. What do we call upgraded versions of things? HQ or +1.

It's not an upgraded piece of gear, it's a better piece of gear than the previous one. It isn't even directly related. It shares a similarly colored model. There are many items that have similar models, with recolors, in new tiers.

Iron and Steel Sabatons share the same model as Hoplite. We don't view these set tiers as upgrades. Yes one is an upgrade over the other, but the term upgrade usually is reserved to an item that is improved upon. Not simply the verbal sense of acquiring better gear.

When a game like FFXIV has items that can be "+1" like relic items, it makes no sense to exacerbate confusion by applying this to items that DO NOT have the moniker attached to it. Valor Surcoat isn't Gallant Surcoat +1.

    It's "Valor Surcoat".

    AF1 for blm = Wizard's

    AF+1 for blm = Sorcerer's

The name plus appearance makes them related.

And to add further, you go from Drachen to Wyrm where a Wyrm is an elder dragon which shows an advanced version.
