Fantasy above reality.
Treat RDM like a FFXI NIN tank. Make it generate hate thru enfeebles, and his performance is about not getting hit, but if he does get hit he's got the ability to take the hits until he can get his enfeebles back up. Give him self-Haste and self-Stoneskin bonuses, and access to tank armor. Make it a job off Gladiator with THM sub so it can use sword and shield.
Also, make his enfeebles AoEs that stick for longer than current enfeebles, and that don't have diminishing returns.

The only new race I can see that could become playable is the Padjal since it's already in the world, and adding a new one entirely wouldn't make sense.
Also, [yes, please!] on the red mage.

Not likely. Game design doesn't permit that. Crap solo, broken in parties, ruins balance for endgame content. Same reason BRD isn't made of 9 songs and 2 attacks.
Magic attached to weapon is Mystic Knight, not Red Mage. Would definitely like to see Mystic Knight and Red Mage both.
I think you can have a token healing spell (BLM and SMN have Physick, after all), but I would agree that you could have nothing major unless the second job is a dedicated healer. Would have to focus on damage aspect of White Magic -- Harm/Dia, namely. No Dia in the game ATM, leaving it open, but there's also no holy aspect, so /shrug. You'd have to pick between DPS/healer and DPS/tank -- no healer means no healing spells (odd for Red Mage); but no healer in the series uses swords, and a Red Mage without a sword is not a Red Mage at all.Don't know if you ever played WoW, but they could work like an Enhancement Shaman which was a class that utilized both offensive magic and melee attacks in it's skill set. I can see RDM pulling this off. Would have to sacrifice healing however. With FFXIV's setup, one job can't be both a DPS and a healer. Perhaps in it's class form, but jobs have to have a specific specialty.
