It doesn't translate well, since the English word is 'material'. Which is simply an item component used in a crafting recipe.
I think it would be confusing.
"Hey, what are the materials needed to make that item?"
"What? You don't need any materia."
"No, materials."

Materia is just a strange term that doesn't feel right. It's like you tried to say 'material', but you forgot the 'L'.
