Materia was the name of one generation of Crystals from FF7, Just like Magicite was the name of the crystals from the 6th entry. Magicite already had its chance to be used heavily a second time. Its time Materia did.
Crystals (Multiple)
Orbs (Multiple)
Magicite (Multiple)
Materia (Twice)
Let Materia have its chance for a third time.
Its just as much a part of Final Fantasy as Crystals, Orbs and Magicite. The same way that Guardian Forces are summons, Edilons, Aeons, Avatars, and Primals are Summons.
I have to thank Square-Enix for the amazing job they have done recreating Final Fantasy XIV from Scratch. Especially the inclusion of Missing Genders which we petitioned for in good faith. This was proof to us players that the Developers are truly Sympathetic to our requests and that being honest and vocal can pay off with the amazing characters we have who are Female Roegadyn, Male Miqote, and Female Highlanders. Thank You SE, Thank You Community Team, Thank You Yoshi-P.
I understand the point you're trying to make, but I'm actually saying something similar (just pointing to a different result). Final Fantasy incorporates different names for common elements depending on what's appropriate for the story. We've already laid down the groundwork with the term 'aetheryte'. I just don't think 'materia' fits into this scheme.

In FF 7 Materia was magical orbs that are placed in special slots on weapons and armor, and that sounds an awful lot like what we will be doing. Further in FF7 Materia are small spheres of crystallized energy, i do not see how that dose not fit in to the game. People are just hung up with seeing the name Materia again, when in reality i don't see the problem seeing as every game borrows terms like magic, and skill points. If the word is accurately used to describe something who cares if it was used in a past title.I understand the point you're trying to make, but I'm actually saying something similar (just pointing to a different result).
