Wait... so... what's the problem again? I have no idea why there would be anything wrong with the way it's set up now.

Item levels do not matter.
Most MMO's have an Item level and a Required level. Item level is just a level of the stats on that item... usually higher item levels have more stats. Required level is the only thing that matters. When can you use said item.
They're just numbers.
Well, it may not to you, personally I don't want to see gigantic numbers that have no meaning clogging up my gear stats, all for the sake of derps that don't feel like comparing stats, or memorizing what gear is better :T
"durr this piece of armor has 15 vit, dan dis un has 17 vit, I JUST CAN"T TELL WHICH IS BETTER UNLESS I LVL!!!!111!"

Everything in the game is just numbers. It's nice for them to have some kind of relevance behind them rather than arbitrary values. If you look at lower level items, their item level actually represents what level of item it has the stats of. A level 35 spear with an item level of 37 has the same damage as a level 37 spear. I don't think a level 90 weapon is going to have the same damage as a lvl 50 relic. It seems more like a level 55-60 weapon if they keep the same basic damage increase throughout the next 10 levels.
Again, it doesn't affect the game, but it's still something that bothers me.
I think WoW is up to iLvl500-600 now? The level cap is 90? So, in the grand scheme of things, with some exceptions, the iLv of an item simply refers to its relative strength -- the higher the better. And that's about it.
In FFXI, the iLv generally refers to what your character level would be with those stats because they can't move the cap past 99, but that's not really how it works in WoW, and though I can definitely see that's what they were aiming for with FFXIV's system, they've already started to lose sight of that, because if we were at Lv 90, we'd have boosts to elemental resistances, *all* stats, determination, and etc. and the items are not doing that. So just look at the iLv as a basic determinant of the item's relative strength compared to other item levels, not yours.
