"Once upon a time" people used to play on PCs that only had HDDs with 10-20 gigs and playing games on DOS. Also games only took anywhere between 500mb-1gb. I remember when Diablo 2 came out and thinking 1.5 gb of a game was crazy talk.

When MMOs first came out the gaming abilities of the general populous were limited.

Fast forward to today and most of the MMO players have been playing for a decade or more these players have gotten better at this genre. Because of that content is being consumed much faster now than it was in what some might say was the "Golden Era" of MMOs back in the early 2000s.

It is true that most MMOs are going towards the feared "Casualization" but its because people don't have time to sit and play for hours and people are better at playing them and thus go through content much faster now than a decade ago.
