RDM's did use swords, in some solo situations and such.
But in party play, there are *better* DD choices than a mage with a sword.
So they were used as healers/support in party play since their melee skills weren't as good as the samurai, warrior, etc. (and it shouldnt have been better than the melee classes)

Solo is meaningless in a game built from the ground up on partying. Swordplay is part of the Red Mage concept, and should be relevant. It wasn't last time, hence why I want that corrected. Magic Fencer implies fencing with magic tied in, not refresh/haste bot.

And I'm not asking for it to be better. I'm asking for it to be a viable choice so that a Red Mage that chooses to use his sword can freely do so instead of limiting it to just being a toy for soloing.

    * The sad thing is that FFXIV turned RDM into a turret, and people think that's what it's supposed to be. It's supposed to combine sword and magic into something more, not spend the bulk of gameplay spamming spells and jump into melee for only 3 GCDs before scurrying back to the back line like good little casters.

I agree. There were better DD choices other than a RDM, but I never saw red mage as a (pure) DD, it was a jack of all trades. I think RDM should be able to be at the front lines hacking away with a sword (maybe see a return of "en" spells like "enfire"). It can be at front lines doing that, but at the same time, enfeebling, curing, weaving in DPS spells here and there, buffing, whichever the party needs. That's the cool thing about RDM, it can fill a lot of roles (just not as well as a class that focuses all of its abilities on that particular role).

The way I'd do it is tie enfeebling and front-line utility to melee (along with on-par damage), heals and support to a caster-type RDM and call it a day. Since Matsui is talking about roles attached to jobs, I simply declared what I want RDM to be in this game: a magic fencer.

On the topic of a beastmaster-like class:

Perma-charm/tame. Give the BST-type class a stable of sorts to keep pets in with different strengths and such. At the same time, balance things so that the BST is not forced into using one type of pet only (the "X pet is good and everything else is gimp" thing).

It's a stretch, but I would like to see a Puppetmaster type job. I already see those Marmet puppets in Uldah. Oh last night while exploring around, I stumbled across three water elementals. Wish we can play Summoners even if all we had were plain Jane elementals to summon.

I think Puppetmaster would work great in this game, since the engine can support greater detail a job/class that specialises in customization of a pet could go far, eye candy wise. =) And Summoner is surely coming, there is no way they haven't planned for it to be a playable class, since it's a crowd favorite.
