It's funny I came here to seek advice of my Fishers to what bait to continue to hold or not and I find this.. This is slightly discouraging. So many tackles and lures. I was hoping that at 50 I would have a better understanding which bait which location greater chance of isolating a specific fish. No such luck for me. It's really eating my bag.

On an additional silly side note, I'd love to suggest to Square an off hand for Fisher.. Militia Tackle box? Something to keep my lures in. I think that would be nice. It could step up in room as you get a higher lvl one.

oh yeah I'd love to have a tackle box, or maybe a fish box too so I don't have to sell all my fish to the vendor.

with regards to baits I found that unless it's a specific bait for a specific fish (which you can look up from xivdb or somewhere similar), usually the level and description match the results pretty okay. mooching is also a life saver and you get many of the profitable fish by mooching.

Sinking Minnows, made by goldsmiths, has a far better catch rate for Red Coral.

So I moved to Sapsa Spawning Ground, and the rate of hooking Red Coral was slightly better, as that place has only 5 kinds of fish.

I am eyeing the Isle of Umbral now, but I have to finish more main story quests first. There is a spot there that has Red Coral and only have 4 kinds of fish total.
Reaver Hide has the best bite rate, only 6 other fish, one is a mooched fish, one is double mooched, and both have no commercial value. Its a bit past the Spawning Grounds. Unfortunately the Isle of Umbral is not yet accessible.

Also the sinking minnow will not catch oysters or lobsters, leaving you targeting only anchovies, gobys, and coral.

Given that you have godly gear, how often do you get HQ fish? For miners and botanist, max base chance is 15%. Is it something similar for fishers?

i've seen mixed answers for this

soembody needs to provide solid data over hours of fishing each location before posting "which is better"

Tried a lot of baits during night-time and not a single one will net you this fish reliably. All of them will pick up the whole slew of fish below Black Eel in the list. Bass Balls and Floating Minnow seemed to have the best catch rate, but you won't even be close to 50%, let alone 100%.
You can get 100% catch rate on Red Corals, which is probably the most valuable fish (taking catch rate into consideration). I dunno what fish you're talking about, but you can 100% red corals (though at nighttime a second fish is added). Not that it matters since the market is undercut to hell.

At the very least, I would like to have a "Preferred Bait:" section of my fishing log. There would be icons and tool tips for the preferred bait. Even if it's discoverable like, say I wanna catch a goby, since I never fished them before, I don't know what the bait is. It would be ???. After I catch a few fish with different lures, the ???s would turn into the bait that gobies like. Right now, I have to use an outside database to find my target fish, then read up on it's preferred lure. Sometimes, that info isn't even available.

TL;DR: Add a preferred bait section to the fishing log.

We unfortunately don't have HQ rate statistic conveniently visible in character's stats window. I would say the chance is about 20% all the time. But it really depends on the place and probably the level of the fish caught. Sometimes I got 5 HQ fish in a row. Sometimes it's about every other fish is a HQ fish. Sometimes I get 5 fish without a HQ. And we cannot spend GP to boost HQ rate like Botanist and Miner. So it's mostly just luck and how high you can pump up your Perception.

That would be cool. For the moment I pretty much just use this:

There's a spreadsheet linked to Google docs in there as well that's kind of useful.

As for the Red Coral question - I use Herring Balls at the Sapsa Spawning Grounds with pretty good results. My gear isn't that great (mostly raptorskin with Fisher hat and 50 quest rod), but I still make a bit of gil

I have done that for Red Coral, but I don't do spreadsheets.
