This is actually how it works in the game as far as I have seen. One bait/lure will catch 1-2 fish most often, but there is still the chance to catch other fish.As an avid fisherman in RL, I can tell certain baits are used to target certain fish. Like when I am crappie fishing & I use a crappie jig, minnow, or cricket I know I am after crappie. Will I catch a sun perch or small mouth bass on occasion, sure, but the majority of the fish I will catch are crappie. Same when I am using just plain ol' worms or chicken/turkey livers. I am targeting catfish. Will I catch something else, sure, but the majority will be catfish. So yes there should be a more refined list for certain bait.
Honestly I think it adds a kind of real life element to it. I have fished in real life and had some real nice bait expecting to get a big bass only to have a sunfish little fish bite and feel like a fighter coming in, it is pretty funny.

Taking mining and botany, remove the ability to select what you want, and make it so you cant get some items without first HQ gatheriging a completely different item in order to get another item to HQ so you can obtain it. Sound fair? no. And this isn't real life. Sometime you log out and return to real life. Fishing should NEVER have been reduced to some achievement bs. You can go onto farmville or some other crap for that nonsense. Fishing should be a supplier, just like Miner and botanist.
And the over-randomness of fisher is still there.
You guys who are complaining must be doing something wrong. There aren't that many fish that are valuable, but the ones that are you can use the right bait and catch them 100% of the time, no trash fish involved for the most part. Fishing IS a supplier, albeit only of about 5 fish that have any demand at all. I would love to see it expanded as I consider it my main job in the whole game, but I've made over a million just fishing so far and "randomness" is never a factor.

Black Eels.
Tried a lot of baits during night-time and not a single one will net you this fish reliably. All of them will pick up the whole slew of fish below Black Eel in the list. Bass Balls and Floating Minnow seemed to have the best catch rate, but you won't even be close to 50%, let alone 100%.
You can get 100% catch rate on Red Corals, which is probably the most valuable fish (taking catch rate into consideration). I dunno what fish you're talking about, but you can 100% red corals (though at nighttime a second fish is added). Not that it matters since the market is undercut to hell.Black Eels.

You mean the whole 3 fish that actually have to be caught that are used in crafts that are worth a damn? yea, I caught those. Razor clam, Mahi Mahi, Silver shark. Thats it. You should check some vendors for the rest of the relevant fish.
Uh, no. None of those three are any of the ones I've made a mil off of.

Riot55: You know your trade well. I haven't even seriously started fishing and I have a fair idea on which ones I can sell for money and which ones I can just NPC. Mostly through trying out other crafts.
Shiyo: FFXI fishing started similarly like this before stuff like fatigue and such were put in. Now they put it back to how it was but with better animations and less complexity among the bait choices.
Meimei: If you're asking fr33lancr is they fish, their comment suggests they do. They seem to know the biggest problem (in my opinion) with fishing...space. Space needed for bait/lures and space needed for fish caught. I'll admit there are other problems (like the useless GP or cross skills) but catching the fish is currently ok. It can be tweaked to offer better performance as more bait/lure is brought out I think but the catching of the fish is working as intended. It needs patching but it doesn't need a serious patch.
I'm a crafter Jim, not a Warrior! I don't want to fight as a Warrior just to be able to craft!
