I know, I still think it's weird they would've gone from the current FFXI fishing to what we have as FF14 fishing, a direct downgrade in every way.

I recently just go my Miner to 50, and took up fishing for fun. I'm only level 8 so I can't speak to catching high level fish. I will say though that even at this level fishing is a much more interesting and entertaining class to play compared to Miner.
It's weird how fishing in FFXIV is a direct downgrade to FFXI fishing in every way possible. How does that even happen?

Fishing is fine, the only thing that needs to be done is adding a tackle box so we can keep all our bait/lures without eating up our slots!! If that were the case this post might almost be complete moot?
Also, add a tab for field gear vs battle gear
Let us cut up the fish we catch to give us random crystals, materia catalysts and even dark matter. It's silly that FSH is the only DoL that can't get these, while they literally rain from the sky for the other two.
Also GP is absolutely meaningless for Fishers, which seems like a huge design oversight. We can't even make use of the only crossclass skills we can inherit. Namely, the Wards, because we can't get crystals.
"Fisher is fine" - are you serious? Do you even play it?
There's no use denying it's in need of a serious patch.
I won't complain about mooching tho, it's kind of fun. So is the fishing log. But please let us fishers actually contribute to the economy. @.@

I'll agree to this crap RNG when they make more than just about 10% of the catchable fish useful, and when Fisher gets use for the GP it has, and when spearfishing comes back. Basically I'll agree with the state of fisher when they finish the damn class.
Look @ bring back alchemy and culinarian crystal creation thread. ARR fishing and recipe amounts is garbage and lazy compared to 1.0.
And I cant still fathom how despite one of the reasons people hated gathering was because they didn't get what they aimed for, "Gathering had too much RNG" yet people are apparently settling for only the other 2 classes losing the garbage RNG, but fishing actually getting more RNG. None of the gathering classes are perfect, and fishing is the worst.

RNG has never = challenge... Challenge would be a minigame that to win, such as fighting the fish and tugging and reeling at the right times, or your line breaks. I know many a game with a fishing system that did just that.

I agree that SOME of the baits has too many possible catches, making it quite hard to pick a specific fish. But I think it is still manageable. It gets frustrating sometimes, but I believe that after getting used to fishing, getting to know the bait/target combination, and learning where the prime location is, I will SOMEDAY manage to get any fish I want any time I want. I am still learning to manipulate my fishing and it does not seem easy. But I am willing to try. I personally think that 2.0 fishing system is FAR better than 1.0. I really love the new system. And I believe there is a way to work around this upsetting wide range of catches.
I've been through similar upsetting experience today. I tried to fish Red Coral for a GSM who contacted me. First, I went to North Bloodshore for it because the bait people said to catch Red Coral (Herring Ball) is sold at Costa Del Sol. After an hour, the result was totally disappointing. I caught only 3 Red Corals and a crap ton of other fish. Problem is, that spot has 9 fish. So I moved to Sapsa Spawning Ground, and the rate of hooking Red Coral was slightly better, as that place has only 5 kinds of fish.
I am eyeing the Isle of Umbral now, but I have to finish more main story quests first. There is a spot there that has Red Coral and only have 4 kinds of fish total.
Though I can put up with current range of catches, I admit that I feel it would be nicer if higher level baits won't catch (or catch less) those very low level fish. It seems kind of a waste to have a level 3 Lominsan Anchovy hogging up my level 45 Glowworm. LOL. But if this is not going to change, then meh, I will just have to find the best combination for aiming at specific fish. Tough luck ><;;

Sinking Minnows, made by goldsmiths, has a far better catch rate for Red Coral.
Reaver Hide has the best bite rate, only 6 other fish, one is a mooched fish, one is double mooched, and both have no commercial value. Its a bit past the Spawning Grounds. Unfortunately the Isle of Umbral is not yet accessible. So I moved to Sapsa Spawning Ground, and the rate of hooking Red Coral was slightly better, as that place has only 5 kinds of fish.

Also the sinking minnow will not catch oysters or lobsters, leaving you targeting only anchovies, gobys, and coral.
